Richard M. Page, formerly executive vice president of Alexander and Alexander Inc. and director of its eastern group, became chairman and CEO of the Alexander Howden group at the end of November. The CEO of Alexander and Alexander said the following about Dick to the New York Times: "We are enhancing Howden's position as a fullfledged member of the A&A family. Howden will be given the leadership and additional resources necessary to continue its growth in the primary London broking market. Dick Page is a tough-minded, successful manager whose eastern group has been responsible for a significant share of our earnings. Dick's new post, headquartered in London, reinforces A&A's commitment to that market. His management skills are particularly appropriate for strengthening the relationship between our U.S. operations and Howden."
Well said! We wish Dick and Jane all the very best in this challenging new assignment. I am pleased to report also that Dick has promised he will serve as master of ceremonies for our 30th reunion class dinner on Thursday evening, June 12. Dick has promised not to wear a bowler to the reunion or to bring a bumbershoot (umbrella).
It is with great regret that I must report that Mark Geller '84, son of Dr. and Mrs. ArthurGeller, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital on commencement day, June 12,1983, following a year-long battle with cancer. Mark, 20 years of age, was a Rufus Choate Scholar, and his grade-point average placed him in the top five percent of the class of 1984. A pre-med student majoring in psychology, Mark was a member of Hillel and Green Key. Mark also leaves two brothers, Jay '82 and David '86, and an uncle, Leslie Geller '52. The sympathies of the class are extended to Arthur and his family. Funeral services were held in June in Morristown, N.J., and a memorial service was held at Dartmouth early this fall.
The Big Green certainly has been on a warpath this fall, and at this writing, has knocked off three in a row. Up at the Harvard game, we spotted Fred and Lynn Alpert, HowieAronson and Marjorie, Phil Christophe, JohnGillespie and Sandy, Dick Gorsey, Bill Grover up from Bedford, Mass., George Grayboys, Dick Leary and Loys, Dick and AudreyLewis over from Hartford, Aaron Margolis,Jon Moore and Katherine, Dave McLaughlin and Judy, and George McLaughlin and Betty (George told me he was attending his 33rd consecutive Dartmouth/Harvard game). Also cheering for the Big Green were Jim Tofias,Dick Trowbridge and Marjory, Harry J. VanHook, Gary and Ann Zwart, and ShellyWoolf and Lynn. Many of the above were also on hand at George McLaughlin's postgame party at his home in Cambridge.
From a September 4 New York Times Magazine feature entitled "The Hamptons: the Strangling of a Resort" came the following paragraph: "The land between the moraine and the sea, roughly two and a half miles, is a delicate landscape, 'made up of sands and gravels and silts and soils, materials easily transported, layered, rounded, smoothed, and finally flattened into a gentle contour under a domed sky at the edge of a broad.gray sea,' wrote Everett T. Rattray, the late publisher of the East Hampton Star in 1979. This is not the sort of land that was made to be covered by an expressway."
Dartmouth Night Weekend brought a large turnout of classmates back to Hanover for a huge bonfire, great weather, and a big win over Cornell. Over 50 classmates were on hand after the game at the annual '54 postgame party at the Faculty Lounge, where we saw Dave Mandelbaum receive the fourth "Class of '54 Award." The tribute will be printed in toto in a future class newsletter, but in part it reads: "The class of 1954 is proud to present this 'Class of 1954 Award' to you, Mandy, and with it our thanks for your many contributions, and our hope that over the years to come our class will be led by classmates who will give as much of themselves as you have given." Later on, a three-way class dinner-dance with '53 and '55 was held. Several '54s were in attendance, with wives and family, and this might be the start of at least an every-five-year affair. Seen on the dance floor were George McLaughlin and Betty, Steve Mullins and Carol, Dave Martin and Crista, Fred Hartman and Ann, Bruce MacIvor and Pat, Dick Giesser '53 and Connie, Jay Chandler and Fleur, Rick Cahn '53 and Vivian, Don Berlin and Barbara, and DickBarker and Barbara.
Taking My Turn, an off-Broadway musical about aging, has been a resounding hit that has the backing of Tony Kane and Arleen. See it if you can. The New York Times gave it rave notices, calling it "joyful entertainment." It is now entering its seventh successful month. It would be no surprise to learn that all the rave reviews put the production right in the middle of Broadway.
Bob Clements, chairman of Marsh and McLennan, the insurance company, was named chairman of the newly-formed executive committee.
Alan Bialosky and Peggy were recently in New York judging teddy bears and offering tips on repairing worn bears at the big Bloomingdale's teddy bear festival and contest. I am hoping Alan and Peggy will be attending our 30th reunion so we can have a teddy contest with these two experts as judges.
Finally, please take a few minutes and chat with your family about our big 30th reunion planned for June 11, 12, 13 and 14, 1984. It may seem far away at this point, but pencil it in on your 1984 calendar now. It is going to be a lot of fun, and all sorts of activities are planned. This reunion offers a great deal of value for the price involved plus a great opportunity to return to Hanover in good fellowship. You have already received some de- tails, plus a reply card. Please send along the reply card so the reunion committee can get a grip on the potential attendance.
