At the Braeburn Club where Spider and Bea Martin had invited us for brunch on New Year's Day, Spider handed me an envelope containing some pink paper sheets which are the official vehicle for transmitting class notes to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and two envelopes marked March 1 and April 1, the dates when the notes for the April and May issues have to be in Hanover. But a careful search of the envelope failed to produce even a single item of news to be reported. So I felt blessed indeed when I received, a few days later, a note from Dana Grossman, the charming young lady who edits the class notes, enclosing a letter which Jigger Merrill had written to his Hanover friends Ginney and Jud Pierson 33. Jud had thoughtfully left it with Dana with the comment that it might make some nice grist for the ' 19 class notes mill.
And so it does. So with a bow of thanks to Jud and Dana, here it is:
"We continue to enjoy the two or three times daily we eat. My bride of 58 years sees and hears better than I do but I walk better than she can and enjoy the exercise more. She has trouble writing or sewing so does little of it. I have trouble driving after dark so do not, but fortunately she has no trouble. Her lower back continues to bother; sciatica also requires her to spend more comfortable hours stretched out on a divan. I just nap in my easy boy chair with feet up.
"After eating at one of our favorite local spots, Vicki said, 'Bob Blackman is going to build a house here.' Says I, 'Who said so?' She, 'The waitress.' Me, 'I don't believe it, but find out where, etc.'
"After next visit: 'Her husband went to Cornell hotel school and his brother, who is a builder here, has the contract.' Good."
So there you have it, right from our preeminent newsletter editor himself, including the secret of how to dig out news of Hanover personalities in Hilton Head. Just ask the waitress. Dana's note to me said, "Newsletter edi tors are often reluctant to talk about themselves in their own forum," so I am happy to include this bit of news of our reluctant editor in these notes.
By the time this April issue reaches you, the 1983 Alumni Fund campaign will be in full swing, so please send your contribution to Nock Wallis if you haven't done so already. And remember, participation is important.
