The editor asked that we recall some old time experiences a while back. I thought of writing about freshman picture fights, troughing, and other such antics, but settled on the following:
In our time the grill in College Hall was managed by a strict disciplinary named Jim Haggerty. He sat on a stool in one corner where he could watch everything that happened. A classmate, Tom Bresnahan, was a waiter. He also reported for several newspapers on a per-inch basis. Dartmouth was playing Holy Cross at Worcester and Bresnahan was going to the game to report it for one of his papers.
Haggerty gave him 100 dollars to bet on Dartmouth. When Bresnahan got to Worcester he spent so much time arranging for his Western Union service he did not get a chance to make the bet. Dartmouth lost and on Monday morning he went to Haggerty to return the money and at least get a smile from Haggerty. He explained what had happened and returned the money.
Haggerty said, "I knew I couldn't trust ye." We have suffered several deaths lately: BillDick-Peddie, Red Loudon, Arthur Gilson, and John McCrillis. Formal obits will appear later. We shall miss them all.
