I was fortunate to be among several of our classmates at the first annual presentation luncheon for the awarding of the " 1962 Faculty Fellowship." The very impressive program for the luncheon, held on April 16 at the Hanover Inn, listed the members of the fellowship committee Mahlon {"Sandy"] Apgar IV, Gary A. Spiess, Daniel P. Tompkins, and Dean Hans Penner.

Attending the luncheon, in addition to the members of the fellowship committee, were Class President Josh Rich and College Counsel Cary Clark, as well as Jay Pierson and John Clark. President McLaughlin was unable to stay for the luncheon itself but was well represented by administration and faculty personnel. Sandy Apgar made some remarks during the event, and the actual presentation was done by Dan Tompkins. The first recipient of thee lowship was Professor Jocelyne Kolb, and Pro fessor Esther Rashkin was named an honors fellow.

John C. Heston Jr. '54, director of communications for the College, was very helpful in obtaining recognition for this project, assisting in getting an article on the fellowship featured on the front page of VOX of Dartmouth, a new neWspaper owned and published by the College. It appears bi-weekly during the academic year and is distributed free of charge to employes students, faculty members, and administrators on the campus. The article, headlined " '62 Faculty Fellowship Awarded," follows:

"Jocelyne Kolb, assistant professor of German language and literature, and Esther Rashkin, assistant professor of French and Italian languages and literature, have been named the first recipients of the Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship. The Class of' 62 Faculty Fellowship was established as the first alumni class gift given especially to support research. A portion of the endowment provides funds that free a non-tenured junior faculty member from teaching for a term of research, in the belief that, by providing outstanding junior teachers the time for necessary research, they will foster 'Dartmouth's unique contribution among this country's major universities . . . exceptional teaching. The recommendations for fellows were made by a committee of the class of 1962 and forwarded by Dean of the Faculty Hans Penner to the Committee Advisory to the President for their final selection.

"Professor Kolb, who holds a B.A. from Smith College and a Ph.D. from Yale University, came to Dartmouth in 1979 as a visiting assistant professor and in 1980 was appointed assistant professor. Prior to coming to Dartmouth she taught at Smith, Bard College, and Amherst College. She has published articles on Heine and plans to embark on a study of Thomas Mann and Proust and the way the narrative reflects and affects the theme of their novels.

"Professor Esther Rashkin specializes in 19th-century European and American literature and in the modem literary theory of film. A graduate of Queens College of the City University of New York, she received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1979, the year in which she joined the Dartmouth faculty. She has written on Balzac, Poe, and Villiers, and has a book in progress on The 'Uncanny.' "

Jocelyne Kolb, right, assistant professor of German language and literature, and Esther Rashkin, left, assistant professor of French and Italian, were recently named Class of 1962 Fellow andHonorary Fellow, respectively. More on this new award is in the '62 class notes.

The class of 1962, selected as Class of the Year, was honored for its "trail-blazing and recordbreaking" performance. Cited were the attendance at its 20th reunion last year breaking "all existing reunion attendance and giving records"; the commencement of its '62 Faculty Fellowship; its successful executive committee meetings and mini-reunions; its "spectacular participation in dues and the Alumni Fund, and "excellent class communications."
