Welcome to the world of '82s a world full of news, excitement, and the trivial pursuit of information about our classmates. Thanks to all of you who wrote and made the pursuit of trivia a bit more informative!
Jason Klein sent a lengthy epistle filled with wonderful tidbits about numerous '82s. He began his letter by telling of recent resignation from Bain and Company in Palo Alto, Calif., to move on to business school at Harvard. Jason did admit that the transition between Bain and B-School wouldn't be too tough he spent a couple of weeks between work and school hiking and camping in Glacier National Park, Mont., and in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming.
After his autobiographical sketch, Jason sent news of the California crowd of '82s: Howard Tung is in Palo Alto doing medical rotations at Stanford Hospital, Bob Faber is now back in Boston, still working with a software firm who transferred him from his lakeside home in Chicago, and Peter Jacobs recently traveled north from UCLA Law School to visit Jason. (Other summer guests of Jason's included Dave Andryc and Mark Belmonte, both of whom trekked across the country from NYC to visit him.)
Also enclosed in the envelope Jason sent to me was a newspaper article written by John Faucher. John has been employed as a "reporter, photographer, and all-around cutthroat journalist for The San Clemente Sun/ Post" says the article, and he will be "hanging up his video display terminal ... (to head) back to graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley. John hopes to graduate in two years and go for a job as an overseas correspondent for a wire service or a newspaper." Obviously, by the first line quoted, the article was satirical, but underneath the humor was the message that John had been an invaluable asset to the paper. Good luck with grad school, John!
And, finally, the last bit of info that Jason sent to me was news of the brand new Dartmouth Club of Palo Alto. Jason, Cathy McGrath '80, and Carey Heckman '76 were instrumental in the beginnings of this alumni venture when you're out in the area, be sure to join in and give them some support.
I also received news, from Eric Cline, who wrote that he is now finished with his master's program in near-Eastern archaeology at Yale and will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in a doctoral program in ancient history. Eric spent this last summer, between degrees, working at the Institute of Archaeology at UCLA. While at the Institute, he set up a museum exhibit that will start at UCLA, go on to New Delhi, India, and end up in Damascus, Syria, sometime in 1986. Eric says that he also spent some time this summer "advertising for the Big Green at all the Olympic events I could worm my way into ... (it's) amazing how many other alumni one can meet merely by wearing a sweatshirt...." And, in his spare (?) time, Eric has been continuing with his photography, having just won an award from the Photographic Society of America for the second year in a row. Eric, how did you find the time to write me a letter? Never mind, it's much appreciated!
John Carrington sent news of Dick O'Meara, who is at UVa Law. Dick is rooming with Joe Ranzini, who is attending UVa Medical School. John also wrote that he has recently heard from Russ Gombosi, yet another medical student, but Russ is at Penn State Medical School in Hershey, Pa. Russ is filling his time outside of the lab by playing rugby on a local team and by volunteering as a scoutmaster. And for news of John (Carrington) he's received his M.S. in computer science and is now working for MITRE Corporation in Bedford, Mass.
Gordon Cook wrote to tell us that he is working for the U.S. Geological Survey, mapping surficial glacial geology in the central Brooks Range, Alaska.
And now, for local, firsthand, first-heard news. Bob Lewis was recently sighted playing softball at a Dartmouth Club of Princeton summer picnic. Bob is living in Trenton and working in a special center for autistic adults. Another Princeton summer event was the wedding of Jenny Chandler to Stephen Hauge (a Williams graduate). A slew of '82s flew in to attend the festivities. Among these were: John Moscarino (UCLA Law), Chris Caravette, John Froemming (both of whom are at law school in Chicago), Jill Rizika (working for the African-American Institute in NYC), Kathie Delisle (an accountant with Coopers and Lybrand, NYC), Gray Reisfield (in the film industry in California), Robin Riley (working in the public relations department for Lancome Cosmetics, NYC), John Kaplan (with Morgan Guaranty in NYC), Woody Kingman (accountant with Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell, NYC), Rosie Dupre (entrepreneuring in Pennsylvania), Meg Singer (a bond trader for Goldman Sachs in New York), Mary Thomson (an account executive with Leo Bernet, Chicago), Carolyn Wilcox (with A.G. Becker, NYC), and Amy Warner (a third-year student at Boston College Law School). A great reunion and a gala event!!
Enjoy the fall and keep the letters coming it's always great to hear from you! Em.
On June 17 several former Dartmouth ski team members ran up Mt. Washington in the annual Mt. Washington Auto Road Foot Race. It was a beautiful, warm summer day at the base when the 800 contestants left the starting line. More than one hour, 7.7 miles, and several thousand vertical feet later, a moderate breeze and a noticeably cooler temperature greeted the racers at the summit. Representing Dartmouth were, left to right, John Eldredge '76, John Morton, head ski coach, Kerstin Sonnerup '80, Kirk Siegel '82, Leslie Thompson '86, and Anna Sonnerup '84. Not pictured are competitors Chris Nice '75 and Bill Biddle '52.
