Commencement. Another year, another class. Yet, like every other class, we, the class of 1982,' tend to think of ours as a "special class. We are special. The individuals in our class very special people for whom commencement meant just that ... a beginning.

This last year has brought Martha Hill closer to realizing her goal to compete in next year's Handicapped Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Currently, Martha is ranked in the top two 01 the nation's women's handicapped racers. A cent article written about this determine states that she "has been battling ... for the top spot among women tri-track racers in United States. During the regionals he cently in Powderhorn, Colo.,.. Hill won slalom." And to think that this is only second year of competition!

Yet another '82 has excelled in the skiing world this year. Kirk Siegl participated in the New Hampshire State Biathlon Championcompeted against top skiers from all over the country, and won! The biathlon is a combination of Nordic skiing and both prone and standing rifle-shooting. Good going, Kirk!

Off the skiing track, Steve Whitely sends news of many '82s who have been out roaming the earth for the past 12 months: "William Dickson Cunningham is headed toward New Zealand after a successful season as a geologist jn Vermont. Barry Schweitzer is pursuing a graduate degree in neuropharmacology (!), and Rob Ford is a post-graduate T.A. with L.S.A. programs in Spain and Mexico." Steve himself has spent this last year working as a geologist in Georgia. Beyond the thanks we owe to Steve for this info on our classmates, we owe him congratulations. Steve married Sharon Myers on May 7. The best of life and love to you two!

Seth Swirsky is also due some felicitations, but for different reasons. Seth wrote the music for a successful off-Broadway show, Oh Baby! In addition, he wrote Rainy Day Girl, a song that is being recorded on Columbia Records by a major artist. And, if all of that isn't enough, Seth is recording an album of all of his own material.

Two other 'B2s who are pursuing artistic careers are Debbie Rollins and Jim Mott. Debbie is in the wilds of Maine training as an apprentice potter, and in upstate New York a recent local tabloid pictured Jim sharpening his draftsmanship skills. The last year has seen Jim support himself by painting houses, and in his spare time he's been developing and honing his artistic ability on paper and canvas. He will attend graduate school in fine arts at the University of Michigan come September.

Among other '82s who have begun the pursuit of graduate degrees are Kate Rabassa, who is "surviving the Socratic method at Cardozo; Cathy Camp, who is working toward an M.A. in geography; Jay Clemens, who is studying at the Beijing Normal University in China; and Alyson Pytte, who spent the 1981-82 academic year at the Fudan University-in Sharigai and is currently enrolled in the Chinese program at Harvard. Continuing in this international academic vein, Rich Nadworny is studying Swedish and international relations at the University of Stockholm, Phoebe Chandler is spending a year at an art school in Paris, and Craig Bradley is finishing up his master's degree in English at the University of Edinburgh: Annie Bork is also studying in the British Isles she has been living in London Md attending Sotheby's "Works of Art" course.

Thus, it has been a successful, exciting, stimulating, and enlightening 12 months since our graduation. And to put the icing on the cake, have a class baby! Sue McClary Keenan gave birth to a beautiful six-pound, six-ounce, baby boy john Christopher —on vid keenan '75), and their Sue, her husband (DaVt. Talk about a commencement!

Enjoy your summer, and remember to keep in touch. Until next fall ... be happy! Em.
