Lend an ear or rather an eye to this welcome report from our Delray Beach, Fla., correspondent, Bob Wallace:
"John Goodwillie had a little cocktail gathering of our Delray group at his place on March 5. The group included Si and FranLeach, Forsha and Sunny Russell, Sam andPolly Groves, John and Ruth MacKechnie,Mattie and Lorene Matteson, my wife 'Speedy' and myself, plus Mickey Emrich '30 and his wife Louise. Bob and Mary Oelman couldn't make it, as Bob was in Hawaii for a meeting marking NCR Corporation's 100th anniversary.
"Believe it or not, we have five of us from '31 (Leach, MacKechnie, Oelman, Russell, and I) who belong to and play golf at the same club (Country Club of Florida), where Bob Oelman is completing his third year as president."
Bob goes on to say that, since giving up their former home in Montclair, N.J., he and Speedy have spent about eight months out of the year in Delray and most of the summer at a cottage they rent at Skytop in the Pennsylvania Poconos. They also took a trip to Europe last fall, their first in a number of years. Bob says they enjoyed it but found it more tiring than a similar one in the summer of 1931. "I think I know the reason," he concludes.
Ruth and Fred Slaughter sent us some grand color photos of the Sarasota mini-reunion. They were in Las Brisas, Mex., in late February when Fred experienced a bad vision problem. They flew from Acapulco to Chicago nonstop on March 1 and Fred had a twohour operation the next day to restore the detached lower portion of one retina. On March 11 he wrote, "The prognosis is favorable; with two weeks of cautious recuperation, I expect to progress through limited duty to combat readiness."
Ed Brummer writes from Jaffrey, N.H., that he and Eleanor joined the annual bus trip to Hanover with other alumni of the area on February 25. They attended a seminar and had dinner at the Hanover Inn; Peg hung a painting she had done of one of their dogs in a humorous show of dog art at the Hopkins Center. They then had two days of skiing at Waterville Valley before returning to Hanover to pick up the painting. While there, they enjoyed a drink and a visit with Eleanorand Bunce Clarkson. When Ed wrote in midMarch, they were looking forward to an early spring break in Puerto Rico, with Ed anticipating loosening up his golf swing at Dorado.
To get the latest word on Ruth and JackWeatherley, I phoned my close neighbor, their son John '73, and received very good news. They were midway through a twoweek sojourn to the Virgin Islands (this was at the end of March) and both were in great shape. Jack had a flare-up of his problems last year but he has made a fine comeback.
As we head into the Alumni Fund homestretch, here's a message from Don Stoddard, that head agent of all head agents:
"Bill has suggested that I use this month's column as another forum for urging those of you who have not yet responded to the Alumni Fund this year to do so soon. In simple words, we need you! As I write this, we are not yet near our participation or dollar goals - and '31 usually exceeds those goals. Thanks in advance - and thanks also to those who have already done their bit." Don had signed his note himself and also on behalf of all our assistant class agents.
That says it. Now just think how good you will feel if you increase your contribution to the College over last year's and put it in the next mail. Good going!
