From Alaska to Rio, from San Francisco to Boston, have I got news for you! And you know what? Everyone in this month's column has upped his Alumni Fund pledge ten percent! Steve Lanfer and Hector Motroni are checking.
Toni Hinderman is putting Rocks 1 to advantage as a geologist in Anchorage, Alaska. (Actually he lives in a ski resort, Girdwood, outside of Anchorage.) His specialty is hardrock and placer-mining geology, which takes him to all the far corners of the state. But the somewhat depressed mining industry has him hoping for better "prospecting" in the future (that's awful). Toni, look up Jim Yarmon if you can and tell him to drop a line!
Our man in Rio, Bill Koelsch, is fighting inflation in Copa Cabana. His second son, Fabio Andre Paranbos, was born last June. Marcelo is five. Bill notes, somewhat wryly, that Brazil's rate Of inflation has left him making less today than 15 years ago. We're probably all in that boat to some extent. But what are a few pesos anyhow?
And out west, Allan Anderson is breathing easy after spending the last three years starting Crosspoint Venture Partners, a venture capital company specializing in "high tech" start ups. More noteworthy, and definitely worth a "Wah-Hoo-Wah" is the fact that he and Gwen are celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary! Al must have given up the celibate life after graduation with a vengence, for now he is surrounded with girls. Count them - four: Elaine, (13); Aimie, (9); Courtney, (3); and Caroline, (2). Al further writes that his west coast location hasn't kept him from seeing the Big Green in action; he attended the William and Mary, Harvard, and Brown games last fall. His new venture, and undoubtedly his affinity for New England, led him to open a Boston office last fall, just in time for kickoff!
In Houston, Frank Blod was named vice president of the orange juice marketing division of Coca-Cola - a little O.J. for the road. Prior to this appointment Frank was promoting Maryland Club coffee, Hi-C fruit drink, and Minute Maid orange juice. I never realized Coke was into all those things. Also from Houston, Bob and Ann Baird took a week off before summer started to go skiing in Aspen during February. More from them in a later column.
Back in the Northeast, Rick Wadsworth was elected to the board of directors of Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover. He has been a member of the Board of Overseers since 1982. Rick is president of Creative Planning Associates in Lebanon, N.H.
And finally to the Midwest (almost anyway). In Erie, Pa., Steve Smith was promoted to manager of off-highway sales for GETEPD - that's General Electric Transportation Equipment Products Division. He is responsible for sales of electric transmissions for offhighway mining trucks - THE BIG ONES. Life with GE has led Steve from Lynn, Mass. (where he joined the company in 1968), to Phoenix, to East Stroudsbourg, Pa., and then to Erie (where he has been since 1976). Prior to this assignment he was manager of manufacturing in the renewal parts support operation.
So there you have it! This month's news is out! Finally! See you next month, and don't forget, to join the 110-percenters!
