I have just a few items of news this month to report, but all of it is special. Both GaryBrooks, our current class president, and PeterGeary, our former president, wil be bridegrooms in the coming months. Details of their respective weddings will follow, but congratulations in advance are in order.
I have received word on Paul Gambaccini's latest activities. He is doing a program called The Other Side of the Tracks for British commercial TV. Apparently the show has been quite a success, and work on it recently took him to a variety of cities, ranging from Hong Kong and Sydney to Hamburg and New Orleans. Paul has also been doing film reviews for morning television.
I thought I would also report to you about our recent class meeting in Hanover. Gary, Pete, Skip Sturman, Rick Shepherd, SteveLeary, and I recently met to discuss matters of concern to our class. A fuller report on this will follow in a newsletter, but I thought I would mention several things. First, I can't help but say how much I enjoyed getting together with a few of the guys. We are still a very down-to-earth, sincere group of people. Whenever we get together we have a lot to share as age-mates and people who passed through a very significant time and place together. Anyway, it was a real change from some of the posturing and role-playing that one comes across on a day-to-day basis. One of the things we discussed was the possibility of trying for one or more mini-reunions between now and our next scheduled reunion. If we can get these organized, I really hope a number of you will seriously think about coming.
A major topic of discussion was our fundraising effort. Steve and his regional chairmen have done a superb job of enlisting your help. To date, about 128 of you have agreed to serve as class agents. I think that is a terrific contribution by the members of our class. This kind of support enables each agent to have a manageable task of contacting roughly six to eight people. Steve has handled all of the arrangements with a very sensitive hand. We have rejected a variety of approaches normally used in Alumni Fund drives. We don't want to insult your intelligence and we have tried to avoid a hard-sell approach. We would like to be able to show the College that we can meet our goals by having a well-organized effort in which many of you participate, and one in which the contributions come because you really do believe in Dartmouth and in giving others an opportunity to see what they can do with the experience. It would be really great if we can show that at least for our class, standard fund-raising techniques just are not needed. So please send in your contributions on your own. That way, if a classmate calls or writes, you will be able to say you have already made your contribution and maybe you can spend time getting brought up to date or getting acquainted with somebody you never met on the Hanover Plain.
