Congratulations to Richard M. Udall, who has accepted the post of class treasurer. And in order to let you know him better, I quote from his acceptance letter.

"I started my educational career in Gardner, Mass., in 1924 as a teacher of mathematics and coach of track. Later I added the coaching of swimming and became assistant principal. I earned my master's degree at Columbia in 1926. We moved to Melrose High School in 1935 and I was guidance director and coach of tennis and 1 took a few guidance courses at Boston University. In 1942 1 went to Patchogue as principal and in 1946 moved to Valley Stream, N. Y., as district principal of the Central High School district. We grew from one high school with 1,700 students to four high schools with 7,500 students. While there I was also treasurer of the Metropolitan School Study Council. I retired in 1964 and became a resident of Florida in 1967. In the early years of retirement Alma and I used to go to Maine summers until in 1972 we bought a condominium in New London, N.H. Now we spend five and a half months in the North and six and a half months in Florida. We have enjoyed retirement but have been kept busy breathing life into the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Florida, for which I was awarded a special citation as Alumni Association Secretary of the Year in 1982."

Carl Gray comments on his ski publicity "I could not make it in Playboy magazine as did Jimmy Carter" but he is pleased that the old folks took him in.

I am sorry to have had to write so many obituaries and am glad to say that one member of the class sent me his own to be used at a later date. It exceeds the permitted 300 words and will be placed in his file at the Alumni Records Office to be available later we hope much later.

On February 12 The New York Times published figures from the Census Bureau which contained the comment that New Hampshire has no income tax. Up here they call it a dividend tax but, so far as we retirees are concerned, it is an income tax in the amount of five percent with very few deductible items.

Barbara Bixby is again in the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Mass., this time with a broken hip. She is doing well.

The January 3 issue of The Dartmouth had a long article about the College extending its computer network with 50 machines donated by a grant from Apple and a purchase of many mqre outlets (600 reported) scattered through the campus, some of which may be purchased by the individual students at a fair discount. This will be a major step forward in the availability of knowledge.

The class wishes to thank Flo Miner for her help in the transition to a new treasurer, and your new secretary and editor of this column wishes to thank Walt and Connie Dodge for their help in getting this department organized. Now all we need is for the rest of you to pitch in and send your secretary information in lieu of the "Dear Babe" cards so that we can keep this column alive and well. We need your help! A card needs only a few moments and a 13-cent postage stamp.

Have a good and healthy summer.
