Hope you're making plans to be in Hanover in a few days. It's not too late to join us for Dartmouth Night, November 1, and for the Yale game on November 2 (assuming this magazine gets to you in time to act).
Dartmouth Night has changed dramatically since we were there. The 25th reunion class that's us now is the one of two featured attractions in the giant parade (the other being the 50th reunion class). We get to ride on the fire truck, a la Gamma Delt at least, as many of us as will fit. The parade starts behind Hopkins Center, facing toward Lebanon, winds up the street by the stadium and by Topliff, turns west on Wheelock to Main, right on Main to the street behind Baker Library (Elm Street), right on College at SAE, and thence to the front on Dartmouth Hall.
The parade includes bands from virtually every high school in the Upper Valley (as well as the Dartmouth band), floats, fire trucks from miles around, and lots of hoopla.
As you've undoubtedly noted, the class is planning lots of other activities for the mini-reunion, including a Saturday night banquet in Hanover. We're staying at the Sheraton North Country Inn in West Lebanon. If you haven't signed up when you read this, then call Skip Kendall, our mini-reunion chair, at 603/332-5640, or call him at the insurance agency that bears his name in Rochester, N.H.
Remember, this is the year when our class is something special!
We're special another way, too. Thanks to all of you, Ron Boss and his fund-raisers have won the Green Derby for our class group, which includes the classes of 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1962, and 1963. All are larger than we are. Congratulations.
Here's some more from Charlie Buffon on the class of 1961 Fellows Program. "During their stay in Hanover, Cartter[Frierson] and Ron [Wybranowski] also had the opportunity to talk with the new dean of faculty, Dwight Lahr, and Skip Sturman, director of Career and Employment Services. During these discussions, it became apparent that it would be useful to provide interested members of the College administration and faculty with a booklet of some sort describing the Fellowship program, the past participants, and the types of programs presented."
Charlie is preparing a draft of that, and perhaps we'll use that as a starting point for our discussions of the program during next spring's reunion.
Charlie also notes: "The other immediate job is to select Class of 1961 Fellows for next year. On that front, the idea that seems to have stirred up the most enthusiasm is a program in fine arts to be related in same fashion to the opening of the Hood Museum, and the art show scheduled to be held at our reunion."
If you have some ideas, please get in touch with Charlie immediately 301/ 654-1516 (home) or 202/662-5543 (office).
Charlie notes he found himself seated next to David Birney during a recent trip to California. "David was dressed in jeans and cowboy boots, as befits a noted actor between roles, while in contrast I was buttoned up in my lawyer's white shirt and tie. . . . We had a very enjoyable cross-country conversation about the stage, the law, the College, the fellowship program, and life in general."
Speaking of entertainment figures, did you see how our own Oscar Arslanian joined with Fabian to put together "Good Time Rock 'n' Roll" live via satellite from Riverfront Plaza in Baton Rouge on Choice Channel on August 29.
The show featured, besides Fabian, Chuck Berry, The Crystals, Bo Diddley, Chubby Checker, The Coasters, and Little Anthony, all from the Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll. That must have been quite a challenge, Oscar!
