Jack Herpel is a real hero for editing this column last month while I was on vacation and I'm deeply grateful. The trip was our first mid-winter one and Mary and I enjoyed all 21 days of it. We flew to Rome, Athens, then by a delightful little Jugoslav ship up the Adriatic to Trieste, stopping for a half day in such intriguing cities as Dubrovnik, Split, Sibenik, and Rijecka in Yugoslavia. Next by train to Vienna for three days, and on by plane to Berlin (including the tour of East Berlin), and Dublin.
I am eagerly awaiting an opportunity to see Jack Rose's movie "The Incredible Mr. Limpet." From all reports it is wonderful, so be sure to see it. When I asked Gil Swanson how it feels to be a movie star, he wrote, "It's a great picture despite the fact that my ugly mug shows up for a fleeting second or so in one of the group scenes. Jack makes it sound real big, but my minute part goes by so fast you won't even recognize me. Therefore, I can't answer your question."

TIME magazine of February 14 carried a picture of Rupe Thompson and an article about him, from which we quote briefly: "An old axiom was one reason that lean, lively Rupert C. Thompson Jr., 58, accepted an invitation seven years ago to succeed Royal Little as head of Rhode Island's vast Textron Inc. Whenever bankers run a company, so went the axiom, the company goes to pot; Thompson, who had spent 28 years in New England banking, wanted to prove it isn't so. As chairman, he completed Textron's move out of low-profit textiles and into broadly diversified manufacturing. ... Shattering the old axiom, Textron, under Banker Thompson, last year earned $18 million on sales of $587 million, is now New England's second biggest company after United Aircraft."
