All summer long, the pundits have been saying that this fall's foliage was bound to be poorer than normal because of the extended dry spell throughout the northeast. What do they know? Everyone now is saying how truly marvelous the color is. It was peak this weekend for the Colgate debacle; simply glorious weather and foliage, despite the very unhappy events at Memorial Field. This also has been the big weekend for campus visitations and interviews by the next crop of potential freshmen and their families, in addition to the swarms of leaf-peepers that invade the Upper Valley at this time of year. Len and Nancy Wilson were here from Sherborn, Mass., and John and JoanSmith came from Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Our mini-reunion was held over the Princeton game weekend. Bob and JackieHooper stayed with Frank and Mary JaneCole and Bob and Tian Doran in Quechee. Jim Lynch and Dave Weld came only for the class executive committee meeting. Jim had to pack for a Sunday departure for Europe, and Dave had to hurry home. Gene and Gail Bokor and Guy and Janice Van Sickle also were here for the game.
Sharing in the evening festivities at Pierce's Inn were Bob and Jackie Kimball, Bob Bensing and Janice Belanger, Jack Whitman and Natalie Kneale, Hamand Nancy Bailey, Reg and Nancy Pierce,Jack and Anona Sayers, Bill and CarrollBowers, Bill and Bobbie DeStefano,Monk and Lois Martin, Robbie and JoanSmith, Jim and Gene Von Rohr, Don andMargaret Furber, Dune and Ruth Fitchet,Ray and Sue DeWees, and Whitey andJoan Burnham.
Jack and Grete Rankin, Jack and BethUlrich, Frank Ettari's son, Paul '72, and baby grandson Paul, and Jim Barnet were at Kimball's for lunch following the business meeting. Marjorie Moats's visit also was a very happy surprise.
The focus of the class meeting, of course, centered on our 40th reunion next June 9-11. Reunion chairman Jack Whitman has things well organized already with reservations made for all key events. He will have had a general mailing in your hands by the time you read this.
On Monday, June 9, events will start with a cocktail reception at our tent and class headquarters at the Fayerweather Cluster. Dinner will follow at Thompson Arena with the other classes that will be reuning at the same time. A dance and reception will follow dinner back at our tent.
On Tuesday, June 10, activities start with breakfast at Thayer, followed by an all-day outing at the Lake Morey Inn, with golf, tennis, volleyball, swimming, boating, canoeing, horseshoes, and whatever. Lunch, of course, is included. Our class meeting will be held there also and will include the usual business and election of new class officers. We are anxious to have a really big turnout. At 6:00 p.m. we will return for a cocktail reception at the Hood Museum courtyard, followed by our class dinner at Alumni Hall and a dance in the Top of the Hop. On Wednesday, we will have breakfast again at Thayer, followed by a memorial service and then a final brunch at Pierce's Inn.
It was good to hear from Bryan Black, who has sent an article from Ohio's Columbus Dispatch about Dr. Nick Vorys's success with the first healthy birth from an in vitro fertilization under a program he.directs at Grant Hospital in Columbus. The woman was the first of 44 participants in his program to give birth. My scouts report the good news that
Stephen Kenny and Dr. Herb Schiele made it back to Hanover for the Holy Cross game. I was sorry to miss them, but was out of action because of a knee job done at Mary Hitchcock two days before.
Best regards. Please keep in touch
