It's almost Christmas time here in Atlanta, Ga. The Atlantans seem to be in the Christmas spirit, except, of course, for the unfortunate Cuban detainees behind the walls of the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. The Pen looked more like a war zone with Army helicopters covering the front lawns and tents of FBI swat teams erected around the meager rose garden. The air stayed smoky from the fires burning within the compound and in the distance you could see the Cubans on the roof waving to their wives and children. I find the situation quite sad, especially because I have represented several of those now desperately trying to prevent deportation to Cuba.
On a lighter note, Chris Baldwin has been quite helpful with my column this month. Chris is a vice president of Moody's Investors Service, which rates the credit quality of securities. He manages a group of analysts in mortgage-backed securities, specifically collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs) and mortgage pass-throughs. Chris's wife, Judith, is a textile designer in the garment district. She works for Wamcraft, which is a division of Springs, Inc. They live in Manhattan. Chris and his wife are serious bird-watchers in New York City. They regularly see Wayne Whitmore who is an ophthalmologist in New York City. He is married to Alice Whitmore, a vice president of advertising with Ogilvy & Mather. The Whitmores and the Baldwins rented a cottage in the Hamptons during the summer. Wayne is presently building his own plane which will be a good deal faster than his previously owned Cessna.
Jeff Stewart, a partner at the law firm of Arnall, Golden, and Gregory in Atlanta, Ga., reports that he has been on two interesting bicycle trips during the last two years. Last year he traveled the back roads of Vermont during the peak leaf season. Jeff and his companion bikers traveled approximately 60 miles a day. This past year they organized the same type of trip through the wine country in California's Napa Valley. Next year, he plans a trip to the Canadian Rockies.
Jeff reports that Steven and Patty Whiting are presently residing in Portland, Maine. Steve is a partner in the firm of Hewes, Douglas, Whiting and Quinn, a medium-sized firm where he specializes in litigation. Patty is a model who also keeps busy with volunteer work. They have a son Daniel and a daughter Kelsey.
Rick Woolworth is an investment banker with Morgan Stanley in mid-town Manhattan, where he specializes in mergers and acquisitions and financing of corporations. Rick and Jill Shaw Woolworth '76 celebrated the birth of Helen, the third of three girls, around Thanksgiving. Jill stays involved in community volunteer work and sings with several semi-professional groups. Rick is still playing squash and travels to Hanover frequently since he has a client in the vicinity.
Don Casey was recently in New York and visited the Woolworths. Don is presently practicing internal medicine in Chicago, Ill., playing a lot of squash, and "looking very fit."
By the time you read this column everyone will be practicing New Year's resolutions. Make one to get me some news!
Happy New Year!—Mary
