I volunteered at the New York Alumni telethon this winter, and got some news that way.
I spoke with Drew Rockwell's wife, Sarah. She told me that they are living in a 200-year-old house north of Boston. They had their first child, Nicholas, on July 1. Since he weighed 11 and a half pounds at birth, they expect him to be a football player. Cliff Fitzgerald is the godfather. Drew is working with the telephone company. He is now a district manager in charge of seven product managers. He is finding the telephone company an exciting place to work in the wake of deregulation. They see Mark Farley and his wife and Peer Pederson. Drew was apparently in Peer's wedding. Drew was also supposed to be in Bill Murphy's wedding, but the wedding turned out to be on Sarah's due date. They also see Kent and Christine Pierce, even though the Pierces live on the West Coast. The Pierces have bought a house in Santa Monica. Kent works for a publication called The Bond Buyer, but his heart is more in writing a screenplay. Apparently Kent is really into the Hollywood way of life and has 20 pairs of sunglasses, so we should look for his name on the golden screen. Kevin Hoffman's new wife is named Lucia. Sarah refers to Lucia as a "wonderful creature." Kevin wrote in his Christmas letter, "I was just getting used to two people in the bed and now there are going to be three." Apparently they are expecting a child in the summer.
Jill Roberts said that I needn't write anything about her as it's all appeared in the '77 column, since her husband is a '77.
Fritz Rohlfing III is now working for the law offices of James W. Satler doing trial work and civil litigation. He is living in Honolulu with his wife and daughter.
Judy Roitman was expecting a child, her first, eight days after my phone call. She will be taking two months off from the Service Employees International Union Local 205 of which she is the secretary/treasurer. Her husband, Larry, is a graduate student in ecology at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
Marc SanSoucie is still working for Wang, as he has been for the past five years, and living in the same house in Tyngsboro, Mass. He recently spent a month in Australia on vacation. Kelly Carter '77 and John Glenn '85 work with him. For those who did not know, he got a master's in music after Dartmouth. He still does some music on the side, but it is hard with a 50-hour-per-week job. He is hoping to travel to Nepal next year.
Nick Scheu is living in Hanover and liking it. He thinks the College is going through some interesting changes recently especially with the recent decisions concerning divestment. He likes to see students being active again. He works at Luminescent Systems, a small manufacturer of light bulbs for backlighting liquid crystal displays, dashboards, and jet instrument panels. Nick says that CharleyWise is working in Tokyo for Martin Marietta. His wife, Sheryl Newman '76, and child live there with him. Charley is enjoying Japanese culture and life-style. Mike and Joni Morgan had a baby girl, Alexandra Lee. Mike is working for the state department. He is about to go to Moscow and is studying Russian for that now. Nick enjoys getting to visit Mike in all of the places Mike goes.
Tom Schram is about to move to Eugene, Ore., to get a master's in curriculum development from the University of Oregon. He is currently finishing up his last year of elementary school teaching. He has a son, Cody, who is one year old. He never runs into any '78s, but he works with Mat Montagne '73 at a wilderness ranch camp, Teton Valley Ranch, in the summers at Jackson Hole. Mat is director, and Tom is program director. They get kids from all over the world at their camp. Tom has been working at this camp since 1968. His wife and kid can come along with him in the summers. His wife, Cynthia, is a Mt. Holyoke '78.
Randy Schwartz is teaching full time at Schoolcraft College. He commented that he was disappointed in the recent incidents at the College when the students sitting in were charged with violations of College rules. He thought just the people who broke the shanties should have been charged. He says that Jim Nelson is working at NASA. Apparently Jim wrote to Randy just before the shuttle accident. Jim is working with astronauts, training them to use fuel cells. Randy is still active with the Revolutionary Communist Party, a fraternal party with the current Peruvian revolutionaries.
Terry Scriven's roommates in Minnesota tell me that she is engaged. They think the fellow is called Frank. She has been away most of the year and was doing some kind of training in Hawaii at the time that I called. She will be doing a residency in ophthalmology in New York soon.
Jim DiNardo finished his residency in July. He is now co-director of cardiac anesthesia at Beth Israel Hospital. His wife, Sally, is finishing her internal medicine residency.
Fred Seligson is in cardiac surgery in Pittsburgh. Miguel Damien is finishing his ob/gyn residency at Beth Israel and getting married. Celia Chen is working in D.C. as a government consultant in oceanographic and environmental issues: Stoning Morrell, now of Conway, N.H., recently took over Storyland from his parents.
