"Once more unto the breach, dear friends!" As of mid-July, when September copy is due at this magazine, I am still stop-gapping with class notes, while hoping that some brave and loyal soul will respond to President Sherm's eloquent plea for a new secretary.
In response to our wilderness voice in the May issue, crying for direct news for these notes from 1920 men, came a good letter from Ted Cart of Lake Wales, Fla., reporting that his 88th birthday in April found him and his wife, Dot, both in good health, although his eyes (like those of most of us) were failing and his legs "not spry." Ted retired in 1968, sold his business to Cluett Peabody, and gave the family home in Pennsylvania to their son. Now year-round residents of Lake Wales, the Carts "keep comfortable with central air conditioning" and proudly boast of four great-grandchildren. I might add that despite poor eyesight, Ted's letter was written in an elegant, easily legible hand.
Another welcome item from a male member of the 1920 family arrived on a green card before the May appeal. Warren Turner See July newsletter) wrote that he is now living a widower's life in a beautiful Marcus Ward Homestead in Maplewood, N.J., a very gracious place to be."
Is it too much to hope that other gentlemen of 1920 may follow Ted's and Warren's example and send an update? It need not be earth-shaking (although that is always possible from any of you Californians, of course).
Dot Harvey has reported that daughter Jane Harvey Baldwin and husband Bob have bought a house on Meadow Lane in Hanover, to live in from May to November. Dot hopes this move may bring her to Hanover more often. So do we.
The death of Charles Rayner Hutchinson in Chatham, Mass., on March 25 was reported in a courageous note from wife, Ruth, in which she expressed the Hutchinsons' regret at being unable, because of Rayner's illness, to attend the 65th reunion. "We made the 60th and most of the others," she added.
From West Palm Beach came news of Ginny Bowen's severe attack of bronchitis in the late winter, with the welcome addition: "OK now."
Those indefatigable motorists, Nancyand Pat Holbrook of nearby Eastman, N.H., enjoyed an early summer jaunt through Wisconsin, "Land of Lakes," and around the Chicago area. We had hopes that Nancy ("the hostess with the mostest") might take over the class notes and still haven't given up on this.
The earnest plea goes out again for news. Manufacture some if necessary! Consider taking over the class notes intoto. Or write a guest column. This is truly a vox clamantis, though hardly in deserto, what with condominiums springing up all over, including the Greensboro Road.
Please forgive all errors and omissions in this hurried (and harried) effort.
