I apologize for the absence of '20 Class Notes in the last issue. The long hot summer literally got me "under the weather," and the July deadline caught me unaware, (besides, I had no news!)
It is gratifying to know that other alumni read the 1920 column. A good letter from Robert Rader '44 reads in part as follows: "Several months ago I read your remarks regarding Kit Stevenson and Laura and BillCarter. It reminded me of my association with the Carters, and I thought it might be of interest to the class of '20....Shortly after moving into Middle Massachusetts dorm, I received an invitation from the Carters to come to dinner in their Norwich home. The invitation was sent to all other '44 Christian Scientists. That Sunday I walked to Norwich and was warmly greeted by the Carters.... We had a delightful time. The Carters picked me up at Middle Mass whenever I wanted to go to church with them. ... I had Bill Carter as a fine economics professor—an interesting, thoroughly prepared and entertaining teacher. After I returned to Dartmouth from Air Corps duty, I resumed my friendship with the Carters One of my proudest moments was Bill's selection of Ombudsman!"
An August 3 letter from Dottie Smith Williamson of Maumee, Ohio, reports the passing of G. Donald Smith: "My brother, Don Smith Jr. and I are sorry to inform you that our father passed away on July 6 after a brief stay in a nursing facility for rehabilitation after a fall. He was still bright and alert to the very end. We were indeed fortunate to have him with us for 97-1/2 years and rejoice in the joy he gave all his family." An obituary of this loyal and distinguished classmate will appear later.
