Welcome back from summer! While you were gone, Sandy McGinnis and committee put the finishing touches on an almost unbelievable blitz of the Alumni Fund. Although the final figures are not in, it appears that about $160,000 was raised from 460 contributors. This amount not only exceeds the goal by about $40,000, but it also represents a new college record. While the class as a whole is to be congratulated, Sandy created an organizational masterpiece, recruiting more than 120 of us as class agents. The Dartmouth Head Agents Association has elected Sandy vice president for the coming year no doubt in recognition of an out- standing effort.
The Trustee election results were announced May 22, and in case you haven't heard the details yet, Ron Schram received 12,727 votes for 57 percent of the votes. The Dartmouth summed things up well. It said, "Alumni have chosen to work within the bounds of the present system of the College governance. . . . With such a confirmation of respect for its composition, perhaps the Board of Trustees will be able to satisfy alumni in the future."
In May, the spotlight fell on Jay Regan, who, with partner Ed Thorp, was featured in Forbes' May 5 edition. Their company, Princeton/Newport Partners, is a tremendously successful private investment pool which has shown extraordinary returns by basing its investment decisions on the interest rate spreads that are built into options, convertible bonds, warrants, and futures.
At the end of April, it was announced that Frank Herringer had been named president of Transamerica Corporation. Formerly executive vice president, Frank will be responsible for day-to-day oversight of the company's core businesses of insurance, financial services, real estate, and investment operations.
And as a final parting shot this month, the following: on January 30 at 1:45 p.m., a daughter, Allison, was born to Suzanneand Ken Sack in San Francisco. On the same day in Philadelphia at 3:45 p.m. EST, Ken's brother, Michael Sack '72, and wife Sandy had a son, Jacob. It's obvious that though Jacob was born first, he was born later. Also Ken and Mike have the same birthday.
