What was that you were joking about a few months ago? "It won't really hit me until I skim through my first Alumni Magazine. Not until then will I realize that I'm part of that powerful alumni lobbyist group." Swallow hard, because you're not reading Time or Glamour, you're reading the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Men should take this as their official signal to accelerate formation of pot bellies, and women should do so, too. It's time to decide whether to put your Dartmouth shoelaces into cold storage or modify them so they can be worn to the office or lab.
Within a few hours of the big June 8 ceremony the convoy began to form on I- 91. Why was everyone in such a hurry to skip town, and where did everybody go? Bruce Acker seems to think that Moscow is an attractive place to settle down and raise a family. As he was having his body searched at the border, he muttered, "At least it is a country where I know I can get a job." Before he enters the job market (do they call it a market?) he will study at a university near the Kremlin.
Actually, prior to cracking a book in Moscow, Bruce led a group of high school students on a European tour. Kris Easter and Deirdre McDonald also subjected themselves to the traumas of teenage life, leading their own excursions into Europe. Sounds a little bit like freshman trips.
Several other folks fled the American border too. Mary Beckman and MattHuggins are both continuing their scholarly work in West Germany. While Paul Asel and Jim Gill were peddling hard on Europe's highways, five other '86s were paddling hard on Europe's waterways. Wolf-Dietrich Weber, Dan Kollmorgen,Mike Rich, Charlie Peterson, and Malcolm Mclvor brought glory to the Dartmouth name by rowing in the Henley Regatta.
Also spotted on European soil was Tony Fenwick. Together with BeauBrown and Ken Rutherford, Tony explored a slew of European cities, searching for a place to live for the year. Vitamin availability was an important factor in selecting new home turf.
If you happen to be passing through Australia, you probably will want to visit Phil Tombaugh. Phil spent much of the summer on Tahiti taking pictures of AnneMahoney for our fifth-reunion slide show. The photos will undoubtedly show that each developed a deep sun tan. Phil's tan has probably been enhanced by the rays at his new Australian home. On the contrary, if you see Anne in Washington, D.C., tell her that her tan really isn't fading that rapidly.
Some of us have done a role reversal of sorts, switching from student to teacher. Gloria Arand is being harsh to some twerps in Philadelphia, while Stuart Pierson is using his head as an instructor and his feet as a soccer coach at a prep school. Kate Buck has taken American teaching practices to the Orient. Being unskilled on the abacus, she was not eligible to teach upper level math, but she was the perfect candidate to teach English and history.
As you can see, '86s are haunting all parts of the globe. Apparently the only continent not currently inhabited by an 'B6 is Antarctica. Surely it will only be a short while before one of us is flown down there for a job interview. In fact, Jon Underwood is training for such an expedition in chilly Alaska.
You have probably realized that most of this material is eons old and incomplete. Why not spend a moment and send me some information about you and your friends?
