Here I always scratch for news at the midmonth column deadline and I just recalled that I forgot to report on a very touching event which I attended in Hanover last spring during the class officers weekend. John Barto and his wife, Nancy, hosted an afternoon party at the Top of the Hop in memory of Nancy's dad, Phil McGinnis '36, long-time and recently retired member of the college administration. Phil had passed away suddenly several months earlier at his home in Hanover. The affair was well attended, the refreshments excellent, and the Barbary Coast band played outstanding jazz and swing stuff that the folks of our vintage especially appreciated. It was a great time to celebrate the passing of a man who enjoyed a good time.
At the time of this writing the results of the first four football contests are in and it is clear that the Big Green are in rebuilding mode. And maybe we can't say like the Red Sox fans, "Wait 'til next year!" I managed to get to the first three games. For the Princeton game, John Grocott, his wife, Judy, Edythe and I had the pleasure of getting together with John McDonald and his wife, Ann, behind their daughter Bridget's sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, for a pregame tailgate. John and Ann, along with a bunch of other couples from the Ticonderoga, N.Y., area, make the annual trek to every Dartmouth-Princeton game in style. The affair is organized by a Princeton grad who is fastidious in his attention to detail. This year's entourage arrived in a chartered bus which contained all the ingredients for a successful tailgate party. Seemed like the Princeton folks outnumbered the Dartmouth ones and it must have been a long ride home for John and Ann. Bridget, who was there, is spending an off-term interning at a New York City law firm and then goes off to the Soviet Union for a winter-term study program. She is majoring in Russian language. I learned at the game that Bill Montgomery and wife Maggie had bumped into John in Campion's earlier in the day where the Tall Target was slipping into a special ordered blazer—size 50 extra long. John has always been long, but I didn't know the years had been that bountiful for him. Bob Underhill '49 and George Singer 'SO were the other Dartmouth bus riders I remember chatting with. The affair brought back memories of the time Gene Teevens and I joined the group for dinner in the Nassau Inn following the last game of the 1978 season. It was Buddy Teevens's last game as a player. His brother Scott and my daughter Elaine made the trip. Elaine was shopping colleges. Princeton looked good, but she ended up a Dartmouth 'B3. Scott was in college at the time, one of the five colleges it ultimately took him to complete the exercise. Scott added a touch of Green to the list last summer by taking Jody Palermo, daughter of Joe Palermo '58, as his bride.
It took a while to place the familiar face sitting in front of us at the Princeton game, but when Bob Hustek '51 pulled out a large photo of Doggie Julian and him taken on the basketball court in the early 'sos and given to Bob by Mrs. Julian the night before, it all came back. She was at the game too. Once teammates Hustek and McDonald were reintroduced, it sparked considerable basketball chatter for the rest of the game. Pete Stanley and wife were also in the stands.
More about the other games next time.
