The suicide of President Vargas of Brazil touched off some trouble for Americans in Rio de Janeiro, but Matt Gately and the First National Bank of Boston seem to have escaped. The Gatelys have just been to the Inn. Mr.and Mrs. Grover Fox were at the Hanover Inn in July - vacation trip from their Palmyra, N. home.

Miss Constance G. Cone, daughter of Mrs. Morris Huntington Cone, and Matthew Walker Wallace were married at the Church of Christ, Dartmouth College, in July. Connie's sister, Mrs. Clinton C. Gardner, of Armonk, N. Y., was matron of honor. Connie graduated from Walnut Hill School in 1947 and Smith College in 1951. Matthew Wallace is a graduate of Milton Academy, Stanford University and M.I.T. He is manager of the Salt Lake City office of the National Planning and Research Co.. Inc. of Boston. They will live in Salt Lake City. Jessie Cone moved into her new home on Elm St., in Norwich, Vt., two weeks before the wedding. It is across the street from Ford Whelden's and all 1913' ers are urged to "drop in."

The Vander Pyls were supposed to have been in the East this summer and on Cape Cod to see Johnny Johnson '15, who toured part of the Pacific with them. No word from Van yet, but perhaps it was a hurried visit to Attleboro which made the Cape visit possible.

Andrew McClary, son of George and Adelaide McClary, was married on September 7 to Jane Russell Beaver of St. Louis, Mo. It was a double wedding. Andrew married Jane Russell and Jack Bernard Niedner, Alice Russell.

Lt. Alan B. Shepard Jr. USN, son of Lt.Col. Bart and Renza Shepard, has just completed a duty tour with the U. S. Navy in the Far East. He was the operations officer of a jet fighter squadron based on the USS Oriskany cruising in Japanese and Korean waters. His squadron is permanently based at Moffatt Field, Calif., but left for regular rotational duty in Korea last September. It returned to its base at Moffatt Field in May of this year.

Lt. Shepard is a graduate of Pinkerton Academy and the U. S. Naval Academy, Class of 1944. During World War II served aboard the destroyer Cogswell with the Navy's fast carrier task forces in the Pacific. He went through flight training after the conclusion of the war and was designated a naval aviator at Pensacola, Fla., in 1947. After a tour of duty in a fighter squadron which was based at Norfolk, Va., and Jacksonville, Fla., he was selected in 1950 to attend the Naval Test Pilot Training School at Patuxent River, Md. This school trains naval aviators to become top-notch precision fliers and test pilots. He spent two and one half years as a test pilot, during which time he flew all types of the latest Navy jet fighters. He participated in tests of in-flight refueling, high speed, high altitude experiments and suitability trials of new jet fighters aboard aircraft carriers. He was assigned to the jet fighter squadron to which he is now assigned in 1953.

Lt. Shepard is married to the former Miss Louise Brewer of Kennett Square, Pa. With his wife and two daughters, Laura and Juliana, he is now living at Palo Alto, Calif. He recently had a brief 24-hour visit with his parents at East Derry, making the round trip from Moffatt Field, Calif., to Grenier Field in a Banshee jet fighter.

Ralph Samuel is chairman of the tercentenary marking the 3rd Century of the Jews of America. The 300th year will be celebrated from September 12, 1954, to May 29, 1955-Ralph is national chairman. New York papers of September 6 and 13 carried pictures as well as news items.

Mose Ewing had a set-back in August, so is not going back to his college music work this fall. Other faculty members are taking bis work and he and Bertha have moved into another cottage on the campus, where they live on one floor, and Mose walks around the place and out into the yard now. They will be glad to hear from you at Mount Berry, Ga.
