The Alumni Office has asked me to help find current addresses for classmates of whom it has lost track, but, of these, Walt Gehring's is the only one I couldn't supply. Bill Wendell had an additional list in his January newsletter, so please, all of you out there, check your local phone books, and let Bill or me know if you have any information on these men.
It seems that a note from Charlie Babbitt last spring has been overlooked by me. From his vantage point 18 miles from the Hanover Plain Charlie concluded that student life in our time was much simpler than it is these days. This classmate agrees, as his recollection of outside happenings and controversial issues does not extend much beyond the WRJ flood damage work detail and some student protest organized under the slogan of "Rum, Ryanism, and Rebellion" on Old Timers' Day. Corrections please, if that slogan isn't accurate.
Ed Gruen wrote that Monroe Karasik and he attended the memorial service forChan Griggs on January 3, and that Chan's widow, Emmie, was so pleased that '31 was represented.
Charlie Dwyer, on parts of whose letter I commented briefly in the last issue, wrote that he, like many classmates, had been disturbed by events of the past year or so in Hanover. That portion of Charlie's letter prompts the following comment. Since the number of words allowed this column by the magazine (600 per issue) severely limits the coverage which can be given herein to such issues as those which have dominated the letters section over the last couple of years, and since your perceptions of Dartmouth's needs over the next decade have been invited by Norman (Sandy) E. McCuIloch Jr., Chairman, Presidential Search Committee, P.O. Box 347, Hanover, please send your views — so many of them cogent — to Sandy.
Charlie also wrote that classmates were scarce up his way, as he'd seen only BillWalker and Al Rikkola in recent years. He also sent me his observations on my statistical hobby, punting.
Ed Picken expressed hope that our football team's late season performance promises a title contender in 1987.
A gem in a letter from Beany Thorn relayed by Bob Baumrucker was Beany's report from Grand Cayman of running into a chap from Texas whose ancestors included Eleazar Wheelock and of Beany's desire to ascertain if Baker Library has any knowledge of the connection Eleazar had with Texas. Stay tuned.
A Christmas card from Bob Powell gave an account of all the activities in which Mildred and he participated in 1986. Further to my proposal in the last issue, Reno has a whole lot of advantages which it can add to the trip west, going to and/or coming from San Francisco.
Irv Bettman wrote me a note disclaiming his being the author of the idea of printing a revised class directory in the class newsletter, as stated by your scribe in his class executive committee meeting minutes. So, my apologies to that author, as relayed by Bill Wendell, and will the real author please stand up? A mighty fine idea, and the class Ought to know who deserves the credit.
Vic King, in a letter also relayed by Bob Baumrucker, was most emphatic in his views on conditions influencing the selection of the next Dartmouth president. I sincerely hope that Vic sends these directly to Sandy, if he has not already done so. Aside from that subject, Vic certainly seemed in top form and to have a great interest in and concern for what is going on in our society. That interest and that concern will keep him young.
A Christams card came from FredSlaughter with that great picture of him in his reunion plus fours on the senior fence, and a letter came from Bill Minehan, also with comments he should send Sandy; and that's it for now.
