I (Susannah Gaylord) have just returned from a "business" trip to somewhere in suburban Maryland. My mission: to return the live duck that we here in Senator D'Amato's press had borrowed for a press conference. Your federal tax dollars at work, folks!
Anyway, things here in your nation's capital are just "ducky." We all survived the life-threatening snowstorms, but just barely. Mayor Barry, who doesn't know the meaning of the word "plow," has appointed Lauren Sonstrom as the new snow removal chief. She will be stationed in the Snow Command Center, will answer the Snow Emergency Hotline, and will be prepared at all times to call in the National Guard if extra help is needed. No, wait. I lied. Lauren has really just started a new job with a small consulting firm in Georgetown, where among other things, she is studying the carcinogenic qualities of beer. That subject is forbidden outside the confines of her office.
In other fast-breaking Washington news, Gary Ryan has joined me, AndyFord, and Janet Coit on the exciting fifth floor of the Hart Senate Office Building. She is now working in Senator Trible's (RVa.) press office, and I have already given her the name and number of the farm in Maryland in case she ever needs to rent an animal. (The press eat it up, Gary!) If anyone else wants to work on the THE floor on Capitol Hill, please send your resume and a writing sample to one of us.
Last weekend many '85s traveled to Duffy's Tavern in NYC for a surprise birthday bash for our illustrious class president, Sue "Stella" Finegan. The party, organized by Jo Ann Shannon and Carole Crelin, was a huge success and fun was had by all, including many outof-state visitors. The long distance travel award goes to Emily Smith, who came all the way from San Francisco, supposedly on a business trip for her magazine consulting firm. Sure, Em. Emily left behind roommate Jenny Page, who's working for a design company and exercising fanatically, as usual. Rick Kleeman, who lives and parties in the same building as Jenny and Emily, also opted to stay in sunny California, where he's working for Merrill Lynch with another ex-New Yorker, PhilAnkeny. You guys missed a good party!
Speaking of Carole Crelin, we have got an aspiring star in our midst! Carole recently joined the ranks of those many '85s who have made a career change. She quit her job in Bambergers' copyright department and has taken a job in a "funky" (as she puts it) ad agency in Greenwich Village. She plans on spending more time on her blossoming singing career. Watch for her in clubs around New York!
Arriving at Duffy's from Boston with a beautiful new engagement ring was AmyDurno, who will wed Peter Harned in August. Amy and Peter have made Dart history, being the first couple ever introduced at a Sigma Kappa screw-your sister party to get engaged! Congrats to them both. I issue fair warning to the citizens of Grosse Point, Mich., get out of town that weekend or you'll be sorry. Your town may never be the same! Amy, who currently works at Mass General Hospital on AIDS research (careful, Peter!) is applying to med schools. When last heard of, Carol Miner, who arranged the happy couple's first date, was managing a restaurant high atop a hotel in Rosslyn, Va., only minutes from DC.
Also seen at Duffy's was Chris Mulligan, who has given up a booming pizza business in Nashua, N.H., for the more sedate life of a banker in New York. He is living in Steven Moss's old apartment in Brooklyn with Sal Sorce, and neighbors say they've seen flying pizza dough at odd hours. Steve is now in Clearwater, Fla., hard at work on his tan. In his spare time, he stops by the Merrill Lynch office there, but only to look for a golf game.
Kathy "Babs" Jeavons is currently running for First Lady in 1988. She is now working in Vice President Bush's office and rumors are flying that an affair between her and George is imminent. If you wish her success, send campaign contributions to Bush's PAC. If you don't, the FBI is still checking her out, so call and fill them in on all you know on her sordid past. It's up to you. America's future is in your hands. In case Babs needs a lawyer (you know how messy these things can get), Diane Bonina, who is in her first year at Michigan Law, is interviewing for jobs in DC for the summer.
Spotted at a Dartmouth luncheon here earlier this week was Dave Mitchell, who has left Washingtonian magazine to become a staff writer for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Baily Circus. Yes, I am serious. He offered me free tickets and I can't wait. Also there to greet the new football coach were Dave Coco, RichFulcher, Jeff Johnson, and Dave Searby, who didn't offer me anything.
Need a doctor? Well, if you can wait a few years, you could be treated by a number of your classmates! Cindy Bergman (Georgetown), Tom Mac Donald (Georgetown), Mark Schulein (Colorado), Steve Favrot (Tulane), Tommy Kong (Albany), and Kathleen Buckley (Boston University) are just a few 'Bss who will someday be licensed to cut you open, if you'll let them.
Ted Meisel is now in Singapore, where he will be working for Strategic Planning Associates for a few years. Ted left DavidRosen at SPA here in Washington. Dave's most exciting business trip lately has been to Secaucus, N.J., where he got to stay in a hotel in the Secaucus Mall. Such excitment I cannot begin to comprehend.
