Surrogates sometimes enjoy privileges denied principals, so a few words from Len Morrissey about our new '22 class secretary, John Grovenor Dana. John, as Twoters know him, has the honorable distinction of O.B. E. Though he never proclaims it, that signifies Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He received this award in 1950 for meritorious service in the British Ministry of War Transport during and following World War II.

Since 1922 graduation John worked in New York City for the oceanic shipping company Furness Whity and Co., Ltd. Before retirement in 1967 he was head of the management department.

In his History of Woodstock, Vermont Peter S. Jennison writes, "Certainly the name Dana ranks among the top names of those who for generations have been associated with Woodstock." The index with 12 Danas supports the assertion.

John and Frances (nee Spear) had their 62nd wedding anniversary September 18. Pownal, Vt., is home to their son, Loomis Grovenor Dana '49, his wife, Sue, and their three children.

Classmate John was assistant head agent on 1922's successful 1988 Alumni Fund. He is a member of the Dartmouth Club of Westchester County, the St. George Society of New York, vice president and financial chairman of the Mt. Vernon YMCA, and trustee and treasurer of the local Church of Christ.

This column now belongs to John, and knowing him better may encourage you to assist him wholeheartedly on all Dartmouth projects.
