Two retired medics who spent their senior year at the north end of the campus in what was known as Syvertsen's Siberia were heard from. Ralph Keyes is still at Walla Walla, Wash., and Vinnie Young has stayed at Knoxville, Tenn., as caretaker of his mini-estate. The former specialized in matters of the mind, the latter took care of the other end.

It is a very human account of a very vital person who just happened to be on the Supreme Court. Though John touches on his many judicial achievements, the major part of the book deals with his personal life, his loves and his foibles, and the influence he had on a generation of Harvard law clerks.
