For those of you who couldn't get to the Freedman inaugural, I am pleased to report that it was very impressive. In his address the new president thanked Mr. McLaughlin for turning over the College in such excellent financial and physical condition. With this firm foundation, President Freedman plans to rejuvenate liberal arts education with emphasis on world problems, foreign languages, study, and travel. He is hoping to give our graduates adequate preparation to enter the global world. He further plans to enrich the faculty of both the undergraduate and graduate schools, recognizing the fact that we are really a university and, as such, should strive for excellence at all levels. Jeff and Bea Davis, Jack and DottieManchester, Sam Cunningham, and your faithful secretary were in attendance.
The Class Secretaries Association has given Carl Rugen a special award and a copy of Dr. Seuss's You Are Only Old Once for eight years of splendid service to the College in general and our class in particular.
Now for some news throughout the country. Charlie Clark reports he had his 11th family reunion which included sons, daughters, in-laws, and grandchildren at a lake near his Tulsa home. He still continues his interest in Rotary International. KenJacques, a retired orthopedist from Los Angeles, has been traveling the world on various cruises with his second wife, Barbara. Jean Meek sent a postcard from the coast of Yugoslavia where she spent several weeks sailing with her cousin. At his retirement home outside of Hartford Jud Pierson is recovering from major surgery, which unfortunately required a second operation. Bill and Eleanor Bates were very helpful during his illness, John and HelenManley stopped by on their way home from a Vermont vacation, and Bill and MarcellaTeahan paid a visit from nearby Holyoke.
