Coincident with his retirement last March after 31 years with the Bell System, Phil Trowbridge relocated to Stone Harbor, N.J., just a block from the beach. These moves represent the culmination of Phil's long-range strategy described in our 25th class yearbook to retire to Stone Harbor "some day and become a beach bum." Phil had been the director of labor relations at NYNEX in recent years. His wife, Judy (Cornell '53), also concluded her career as a school nurse in Clark, N.J., prior to the move. The last of their three daughters graduated from Ithaca College in May and was married a couple of weeks later. Sounds familiar! Can retirement be far away after the last kid graduates from college? Phil and Judy's immediate retirement plans include the month of January in a spot they have rented in Key Largo, Fla., and a trip to "Trowbridge," England, in the spring of 1989.
Bill Davis wrote recently about a trip to China he and wife Olie took last spring. After cramming for their adventure by seeing "The Last Emperor" and "Tai Pan," they flew to Beijing via Hong Kong as part of the People-to-People Citizen Ambassador Program. Bill, who is a vice president of BCM Engineers in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., went as a delegate to the First International Conference on Urban Planning and Economic Development and delivered a paper on Interstate 476, a 20-mile link in the Philadelphia metropolitan highway system, which is now under construction after years of controversy. It is believed that the link is responsive to a fair balance between economic need and environmental constraints. Bill and Olie spent a couple of weeks touring China and hit the Great Wall and a few shops.
A recent squib in the WSJ notes that RonMarcks retired recently from the post of vice president and general counsel of Norton Company in Worcester, Mass.
Two of our doctor classmates were mentioned in the news recently. Harry Goldsmith, who is professor of surgery at Boston University School of Medicine, was awarded an honorary degree by the faculty of Shanghai Second Medical University in the People's Republic of China. Ben Stein was elected as a new director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery which is based in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Although I missed direct contact with him by a couple of days during my August vacation, I have it from good sources that our class CEO, Charlie Blakemore, has returned to the advertising world. He rejoined Leo Burnett Company as creative director of Leo Burnett-Mexico, but gets back to N.Y.C. occasionally. Class vice president Dick McDonough is bracing to share some of Charlie's load while he is out of the country. Understand we'll be hearing more about that later. A reading of a play authored by Charlie entitled "The Next One Hundred Years" was held recently at the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre. Roger Pierce was in the audience for the reading.
Jack McNary spent a weekend in late August with John and Judy Grocott in their pad on the first fairway of the local country club in New London, N.H. Whit Williams '5O, brother of our Bob Williams, made it an all-Green foursome. Whit and Priscilla joined the New London retiree ranks last winter.
