By now most of you have become pretty well accustomed to Modesto's increasing domination of national and international events. As such it shouldn't have come as a surprise that Michael Dukakis made his first campaign stop right here in our very midst following the Atlanta Democratic Convention (that is, after stopping off with Lloyd in Texas to drop off pappy). Depending on one's point of view I suppose this fairly proves that Dukakis possesses either brilliant insight or that he will get what he deserves. As for George Bush, we can only surmise that he's been too busy on the paddleball courts in Kennebunkport to drop in as yet.

Now, for those of you who still think Hanover is the center of the universe,I offer the following updates on our classmates:

Tom Ostermueller has recently been appointed as vice president, planning for Bristol-Myers Company. Tom had previously directed consulting projects for Bristol-Myers as a management consultant, (and principal) with his former firm, McKinsey & Company in Stamford, Conn. During his 11 years with McKinsey, Tom worked with consumer goods companies domestically as well as in Canada, Europe, and Japan. He has also worked for Wilson Sporting Goods and Procter & Gamble. Tom's advancement should come as no surprise since he managed to outsmart most of the rest of us by delaying his departure from the Hanover Plain until 1971 while he finished up at Tuck School.

Not to be outdone, Alan Moats has managed to maintain a profile on and about the Hanover Plain for some time now. He was recently appointed manager of the applications development group for Geographic Data Technology, Inc. in Lyme, N.H. Geographic Data supplies cartographic databases and street files, and Alan pitches in by developing customized software and products for spatial logistics applications. With a home in Fairlee, Vt.,Alan keeps commuting to a minimum.

As long as we've moved across the river to Vermont, how about an update on Josh Fitzhugh? Josh is a partner with Sheehey, Brue, Gray & Furlong, attorneys at law out of Burlington. But his real love is the Vermont Mozart Festival, of which he serves as volunteer president of the board. The Festival provides year-round presentations of classical music, but is known best for its three weeks of outdoor summer concerts at locations around Burlington. Josh is especially proud that this year for the first time Mozartphiles were able to attend a threeday Odyssey/seminar dedicated to the composer's towering genius at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. Interested in a little preBeatles Nachtmusik for next summer (plus a pleasing round of cocktail parties)? Call Wendy at 802/862-7352 for details.

This month I must close with the sad news of the passing of Steve Harvard. Steve's body was found on July 30 in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire after he had been missing for a week subsequent to setting out alone on a brief hike. A full obituary will appear in an upcoming issue. Steve, your Dartmouth classmates will miss you very much.
