It was my sad duty this month to write an obituary for one of our classmates. The task reminded me once again of a defect in both my character and performance. I have been secretly operating as your class secretary without a 1958 Aegis for several years. An unnamed person borrowed mine and it disappeared. If you are willing to lend me your Aegis, with promise of return on request or at the end of my term, send me a note. Send some news. I'll respond and maybe my material will become more accurate (but never totally accurate, I am sure).

The Dartmouth Alumni Magazine announced the Chairman's Citation for Outstanding Service for Sam Smith, recently completing his tour as head agent. Did you also notice that matching gifts, which used to be an insignificant part of the Alumni Fund, now total 13.1 percent or $1,574,000 of the total fund? If you aren't using matching gifts and have it available, why don't you start this year?

With one final kudo to Bryant Barnard,Bob Keller, and Dave Brock for operating our 30th Reunion on a breakeven basisand more importantly providing a wonderful experience for all of us—we note the changing of the guard. Sally Prescott, JohnWhiteley, Walt Yusen, Phil Drescher, BobEleveld, Joe Jacquet, John Murphy, JohnCoulter and Tom Amlicke join the executive committee. You may recall that Bob Eleveld was part of one of our dynamic class agent duos of yesteryear with Herb Swarzman, when we broke records right and left.

The Alumni Magazine also published a list of all of the members of our class who have made contributions for every year since graduation. If you weren't on that list, and haven't made a contribution lately, it's time to start your own string. The late Art Raybin was on that list and should be replaced by at least five classmates.

The Dartmouth-Yale weekend provided me with an opportunity to catch up with a few old friends. John Parker introduced me to his Dartmouth son. What a nice young man. Al Gazzaniga told me his son was pretty bruised and beaten after starting at center for the Dartmouth football team. Al is a California surgeon. His son plays with the same steely determination that animated his father in the 1958 championship year.

Norm Sylvester, executive with Horn & Hardart, watched with amusement as his Dartmouth freshman son raced around the tremendous bonfire. Jerry Manne paused between trips to Sydney, Capetown, and other distant points for a cheery "hello" and uniquely Manne enjoyment of the weekend. Phil Drescher was pleased to report that after years on the project, a water conversation dam is about to be approved in his home area of San Paulo, Calif. If you can imagine the scene, Walt Vail, DonMcCree, and John Parker were leaning against Walt's new Mercedes and worrying about the financial markets before the game. John Trimble, New Jersey banker, looked ready to take the field with the soccer team. Frank Blatz and Roger Bruttomesso were telling tales to each other by cut mustache and looks very dashing. AndyPetersen said his computer systems business was flourishing in the Hanover area.

In closing, don't worry about Dartmouth's football team. We have a dynamic, marvelous new coach. In a few years, others will be worrying about us.
