The mailman recently delivered a most intriguing envelope. The return address was The New York Times, Beijing, China. Inside was a note from Chris Wren '57, the Times bureau chief in China, and an article from the June 6, 1984 New York Times. Datelined Shijazhuang, China, the story features Charlie Dickinson and his wife as they read and interpret poetry to students at Hebei Normal University in China. This exuberant couple are described as "cult figures" on the campus. In China initially on a six-month contract, the Dickinsons' stay has been extended into a second full year of. teaching. Their classroom is described as "jammed" with 200 students. Most of the source material available to them is found in the several hundred books they brought with them which they plan to give to the university when they leave. The pay won't make plutocrats of them since it is $80 per week, but the personal rewards make it all worthwhile. Charlie Dickinson, a man in the Wheelock tradition, has a missionary spirit. Our thanks to Chris Wren for forwarding this delightful article.

Carl McCall, described in The New York Times as one of the most visible blacks in the Cuomo administration, resigned as New York's State Commissioner of Human Rights. A former state senator and a deputy to the U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Carl said he was leaving the job to go into international banking. As commissioner, Carl supervised a staff of 200 that processed approximately 6,000 discrimination complaints per year. Carl said in departing that one of his biggest accomplishments was helping to fashion the"most far-reaching affirmative action program of any state in this country" to increase the hiring of members of minority groups for state jobs.

John Trimble has been named executive vice president of both the Princeton Bank and the Bank of New Jersey. Described as "a wellknown and respected member of New Jersey's financial community with a career in banking spanning 25 years," John's responsibilities will be for corporate and commercial banking functions and will include coordinating the consolidating of those functions as the two banks move toward merger. The banks are owned by Horizon Bancorp. The Princeton Bank and Bank of New Jersey have combined assets of $1.1 billion.

Allen Ertel will be crisscrossing the state of Pennsylvania this fall seeking support in his campaign for election as attorney general of Pennsylvania. Allen is a graduate of Yale Law School, has been a successful attorney, and was elected three times to the U.S. Congress, where he served on the judiciary committee. In 1982 he ran against Governor Thornburg and surprised the pundits by pushing the popular governor to the wire before losing by only 100,000 votes, Allen has no big-money support, but he runs a tireless, well-organized campaign which this year features "dutch treat" meals across the state to meet the voters and caravans taking him to every area of the state.

Most lawyers don't send out press releases. Drawing on our own creativity, let us say that Kit Cowperth waite, one of the most respected, knowledgeable, and experienced lawyers in the field, has joined Pendleton and Sabian, a Denver law firm, where he is specializing in real estate development, financing, and condominium law. This firm of 15 lawyers is located at 303 E. 17th Avenue in Denver.

Lee Wesselmann, who joined Owens-Illinois in 1961 after receiving his MBA from Cornell University, has been appointed acting controller. Lee is presently vice president and director of finance and administration, as reported here earlier.

Dick Portland has been appointed by Eastman Kodak as division manager, photographic sheets finishing division. His address is 10 Birling Gap, Fairport, NY.

When Dr. Bryant Barnard, president of the Evelyn Lilly Lutz Foundation, Beverly Hospital, Beverly, Mass., set out for the 25th reunion, he was in for a pleasant surprise. He he was in for a pleasant surprise. He of the department of health of the state of New Jersey. As reportecl here earlier, Charlie is responsible for managing the massive reimbursement program in that state. Dr. Barnard was able to bring Charlie to Massachusetts to preside over a day of seminars for the purpose of educating physicians, hospital administrators, and department heads at the Beverly Hospital and surrounding hospitals about the implications of the new system being developed in New Jersey. That system is probably coming to Massachusetts and other states. From Bryant's letter you can tell that everyone had a good time. He reports that Charlie "has become an extremely important person in the world of medical finance."
