It almost seems as if we lead off each month's column with a report of the passing of another good classmate. I guess you'd have to call it a sure sign of age. This month, unfortunately, is no exception. Jake Holland died in Newport, Vt., on February 3. (Obit in this or a later issue.)

In the travel department we offer the following. Missing Jim Brigden at the fall mini-reunion in Hanover, we queried him in a birthday card with the following results. "We explored England for three weeks and had a great time. This included a rare hurricane and flood. We stayed pretty much in the Devon and Cornwall areas, both rural and beautiful and unspoiled by the masses." Referring to your scribe's trip to New Zealand, Jim commented, "We spent a month there a few years ago and went fishing several times and took in the sights in both New Zealand and Australia. We have just returned from Abaco Island in the Bahamas and plan to enjoy Florida until we head north for N.H. and another summer on the island in Winnipesaukee. See you at the mini in September!"

Janie Chivers teamed up with Betty Olivers, Warren's wife, bought a camper and set out in early December to tour the south and west as far as Boulder, Colo., where Betty lived before moving to Hanover. They have been staying with friends and various Dartmouth alumni en route. They were expected back some time in March.

Sam Hird has remarried, on February 25, to Diane Webb. The next day the couple left for a two-week skiing honeymoon in Switzerland. Sam and Diane plan to make the mini-reunion in Charlotte in the fall.

Bert and Sally MacMannis left home in Connecticut for Long Boat Key, Fla., with a full heart having greeted a brand new grandson in November, fathered by Bert's son Bert Jr.

Your scribe has just returned from a week in Bermuda where we tried in vain to raise Dr. H. Beecher Chapin, who spends half of the year on the island. We guess that Beech was happily engaged in pursuing life in Ireland, where he and Diedre spend a goodly amount of time each year.

And finally, we would remind you that there is time to join the mini-reunion in Charlotte, N.C., this fall for the Davidson game over the weekend of October 1. Up until August 19 you can send a deposit check for $63.72 made out to Robert L. Kaiser, who will arrange your reservations at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Charlotte. Bob can be reached at 37 Rayton Road, Hanover, NH 03755, tel. 603/643-4310. After a magical date of August 19 you are on your own for reservations, so we suggest you get your request in early. Incidentally, you get football tickets the usual way when the applications are sent out by the College. We understand that the annual 1939 Man of the Year Award will be presented at a 5:30 p.m. class reception at the hotel (not 6:00 p.m. as listed in '39 Out). See you there?
