President Emeritus John G. Kemeny, professor of mathematics and computer science, and honorary classmate of 1922, will retire from a full schedule of teaching after 35 years at Dartmouth, when the fall term ends December 7.
He will then have a reduced teaching load for the next three terms of the College, participating in a "phasing out" period which professors design for themselves when retiring.
John, as 1922 classmates knew him, was president of the College from March 1, 1970, to June 28, 1981. He came to the College as a full professor at age 27 from Princeton University, and was chairman of the mathematics department for 12 years during which time that department received national acclaim.
He always felt that every student should have some experience with a computer. He and Professor Thomas E. Kurtz, now chair of computer and information systems programs, collaborated on the development of the widely-used computer language known as Basic. This has also received national recognition.
John says, "I am looking forward to retiring. I have been self-supporting since 18 and have never had blocks of full time. My commitment to Dartmouth is the same as to my wife, till death do us part."
The class of 1922 wishes all the best to John and his wife, Jean, in the months and years ahead.
