How sad if we lose our faith in the best things in our world through false tidings and distortions. Four fine undergraduates recently assured me that the Review and the "movements" in Hanover are minor fringes. Each one said, "I made the right choice in Dartmouth."
A former Review editor admits they rushed to bash the shanties, knowing the College was to take them down the next week. A Review editor who's paid by the Hopkins Institute attacked the Alumni Council by quoting from its minutes, but left out sentences that contradicted her story. The editor ignored my protest.
Black columnist William Raspberry sees through the misinformation and tells the story of the Review-Cole affair just right. (Want a copy?) The Kaffee Klatsch who are right on the scene believe President Freedman may be the finest thing to happen to Dartmouth in our time.
Dick Burke's stroke stilled a constant worrier about Dartmouth's welfare. Mary and he plan to move to a facility where he can be brought to her apartment daytimes. John Compton expressed concern for the future of Webster Hall. I'm told any changes planned are for the interior only so it can be used more effectively.
After quoting Dan Luten's "Progress Against Growth" I got his note saying, "If you quote any of (the reviews) I'll killya!" The book gives me new thoughts in every chapter.
Charlie Dudley got together a meeting of local area '29ers Black, Dodge, Foster,Mayher, Monahan, and Wiendenmayer to plan for our 60th in 1989. First it needs you!
