On the last day of my recent vacation at Mascoma Lake, I found myself looking at Pete Thompson in the business section of the Boston Globe. Pete is the president and chief executive officer of David L. Babson & Co., which manages mutual funds from a new office overlooking the Charles River in Boston. The article commented on some of the difficulties facing the smaller funds like Babson, but I suspect that Pete and colleagues through hard work and Yankee ingenuity are more than holding their own.

Another newspaper article, from the Rochester (N.Y.) Times Union, tells the story of Ernie Arnold and his recovery from a brain injury suffered in a car accident in 1987. Ernie, who had been a vice president of Seneca Foods Corporation, has returned to work full time as a sales analyst after a grueling two-year recovery. He credits the love and affection of his family and the medical professionals who cared for him for his success. I am sure the class joins me in wishing him continued progress in the days ahead.

Matt Weinberg writes from the Golden Gate that he missed the reunion due to the school graduation of his son Mark, who with his younger brother, Dan, are outstanding students, top athletes, and hopefully Dartmouth applicants in a few years. Matt reports that he has a wonderful wife, a successful law practice, and a home in a great place, where they are close to all of his family's favorites: opera, wine, skiing, and hiking.

Roy Nyren and his son Dirk (Beloit '83) are ranked No. 4 in the father-and-son category in New England through the New England Lawn Tennis Association. Unfortunately, they can't play together very often now, as Roy and Dirk moved from Massachusetts to different states. Roy and Nancy, his spouse of 34 years, live in San Francisco where he is senior minister of the First Congregational Church. Dirk lives in Boca Raton where he is a tennis teaching professional at the Boca Raton Resort and Tennis Club.

Dr. Richard L. Fairley, director of education program services in the U.S. Department of Education, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary doctor of human letters degree from Saint Paul's College. Dick has had a long and distinguished career in education which has included teaching in the District of Columbia public school system, several positions in educational administration, as well as a number of executive positions in the U.S. Department of Education. Just to keep his hand in, he continues to lecture at the graduate school of education at George Washington University.

Paul Merriken sends word that he recently had lunch with Phil Mayer, president of the Luitink Manufacturing Company in Menomonee Falls, Wis. Phil's company, which celebrated its 100 th anniversary last year, produces stamped and fabricated metal parts for a variety of industries such as automotive, lawn and garden equipment, and farm equipment. Phil lives on a 60-acre farm where, according to Paul, he enjoys the good life.
