Fittingly the memorial service for Ben Drew in Rollins Chapel was a princely affair. During stately musical offerings by the College organist and the fivemember Belnap Brass, I reflected how much more triumphantly one can leave to stirring trumpets than to throbbing strings. The Reverend Sarah Reeves, who presided over the memorial service at our 50th, read the scripture and conducted the whole upbeat service for her father. Spotted in the congregation: Art Allen, the Corbetts, the Freemans, Warren Hallamore, the PeteKnights, Terry Nitschelm, the Pierponts, Francis Savage, and John Zimmerman.
The 1989 Alumni Fund is history, but 1932's showing lives on. Once more MiltAlpert and his cohorts have come through. During the final month, when our contributions were lagging, the class agents made a magnificent last-ditch effort and met our goal of $75,000. Considering the times and "the troubles," this was a superhuman achievement. We owe Milt and the guys a big debt of gratitude.
Among our snowbirds are Dan and NellGage, who lately checked in from their summer residence in Farmington, Conn. They had run into Howdy and DottiePierpont at Hopkins Inn on Lake Wara- maug, "a delightful luncheon spot run by the Pierponts' daughter and son-in-law." They had also talked to Jim and Amy Corbett, summering, as always, on Lake George. Gages, Corbetts, and Pierponts are all in the pink, but Dan regretfully reported that Jack Morris, whom he saw before leaving Sarasota, was not.
Are you an athletic sponsor? The number of 1932s supporting the College in this way is impressive, and trie sponsors in all classes total over 600. At an August barbecue Dick Jaeger '59, our new athletic director, gave a rousing talk in which he said again that many promising athletes choose Dartmouth over other colleges when sponsors make it possible for them to get acquainted with the campus. Our basketball coach, Paul Cormier, was unable to attend, but James Black- well '90 spoke for the players. In a moving address he told what Dartmouth had meant to him from his first visit under sponsors' aegis. At the barbecue Greydon and EthelFreeman and I represented our class.
