Professor John Copenhaver, who joined the Hanover area retirement community in 1987 after 34 years as a member of the faculty of Dartmouth's biology department, reports enjoying his less structured life and happily enduring his wife's frenetic politics. Marion is now in her 16th year in the New Hampshire legislature as a representative from Hanover. The six Copenhaver children in- clude John 111 '72, T'75, Eric '76, and Lisa '77. Their non-Dartmouth offspring are Margaret, a Penn State Ph.D., and Chris who has her Ph.D. from UCI. All are scattered from Boston to Seattle and doing well.

Another more recent retiree, in August of this year, is Dr. James Jones. Jim retired as chief, division of general surgery, and residency program director, St. Luke's Hospital, and as assistant clinical professor of medicine at Case-Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He and Barbara have moved to Amelia Island Plantation, Fla.

Received a nice note this past summer from Bill Woythaler '43 that included a newspaper article on the history of yachting out of Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Lake Champlain. Featured in the article as perhaps the most knowledgeable person in die area was Dr. David McDowell, who owned one of only three sailboats in the Plattsburgh area just prior to WW 11. Dave, who attended Dartmouth briefly, then graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and medical school, returned to Plattsburgh and in subsequent years has been a leader in yachting on northern Lake Champlain. Also, according to his Delta Upsilon brother Bill Woythaler, Dave is both "an engineer and much respected obstetrician-gynecologist, one of the area's most distinguished citizens."

Attending a fund workshop in Hanover September 22—23 were our head class agent, Welles Fendrich; leadership gift coordinator, Art O'Hara; matching gifts coordinator, Bob Kimball; memorial gifts coordinator, Brad Morehouse; and regional agents, Jim Kennedy and WaltKoontz. Bob Poet, another regional agent, had his anticipated attendance derailed by surgery.

In the 1988-89 Alumni Fund effort we achieved 64 percent participation vs. a 66 percent goal and 92.4 percent of our dollar goal of $163,000. Only eight donors and $12,500 more would have put us on target! Welles has assembled a first-rate team that is already planning for the 1989-90 fund drive, so let's start thinking about doing our best to help meet the goals set for us.

Boston. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla, and seven children, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

Once more I ask you guys to send along those green cards or give me a phone call at 603/448-6941. Only with your cooperation can this column be the vehicle to share your interesting and varied experiences with classmates and other Dartmouth friends.
