The class held its fall minireunion expertly organized by John French the weekend of October 13-15 with Indian summer and the fall colors at their best. While the football game with Yale deteriorated after a strong first quarter, everything else was first class. Among the activities were the class reception overlooking the bonfire on Dartmouth Night, the alumni box luncheon preceding the game where 1955 had two tables, and a most pleasant class dinner at the Sheraton. The following class members, many with spouses and/or children were present during the weekend: Alexander,Ambrose, Barr, Batchelder, Blodgett,Braestrup, Brady, Bronk, Buhler, Byrne,Cogswell, Fanger, French, Gorton,Goss, Hager, Hale, Hance, Hastings,Hudson, Isaacs, Mathewson, Parker,Sauter, Siskind, Weintraub, Woodson.
A meeting of the class executive committee was neld during the mini-reunion, with President Bob Fanger presiding. Following the usual officer and committee reports, a number of potential activities and programs were discussed, and individual class members have accepted responsibilities for developing proposals in the coming months. Among these were class gifts—Peter Thompson; class directory—LarryHager; 1955 resource system—Steve Wilson and Tom Byrne; and class film/video— Bernie Siskind. Bruce and Mary JaneAlexander and Hugh and Betty Brady are our new mini-reunion chaiipersons, and John French has agreed to chair our 40th Reunion in 1995. Ray Woolson reported that 1955 Class Scholarships are being awarded this year to Chet Allen's and PeterSarty's daughters.
I had occasion to talk with Mike Gorton recently and catch up on his current status. Mike is president of Slade Gorton and Company and says the fish business is very competitive these days. Since our conversation occurred well into the evening, and Mike was in his car on his nightly commute home, I surmise that he keeps the competition on their toes as well. Mike is the senior member of the Boston Atoms, an A division adult hockey team. According to his wife, Karen, he is up before dawn each Saturday in season to make a 7:30 a.m. practice! Mike has two grown children—his daughter is in the advertising and public relations field, and his son has joined the family business. Mike also reported that Gene Givens has just sent a second son to the Ivy League basketball circuit, however this time to Brown. I wonder if Gene will have to bet both sides of the game!
Jack Cogswell was recently elected to the board of the Boston Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute. Jack is secretary and treasurer of the New England Telephone Company, where he has worked since leaving Thayer School. He is also very active in a number of professional and charitable organizations. Both of Jack's daughters work for NYNEX, following in their lather's footsteps. Jack and his wife, Pat, are excited about this phase in their lives as they look ahead to the next few years. Jack finds time for gardening, and, based upon my observation at the mini-reunion this week, is still an avid photographer.
