Since in past columns I have expounded on the difficulties your secretary has in scaring up news for our regular chat, this month's effort is dedicated to those of you who gave unselfishly for the greater good of my column.
Sarah Burrell was kind enough to call in her update which not only saves me the trouble (and expense) of calling her, but also permits me the chance to ask hard-hitting, probing questions that ferret out the real story. Sarah began the conversation by telling me she had recently married John Troxel. Sensing she was holding back, I asked about her new husband's background. "He's from Montana," she admitted. Realizing she was about to break down, I raised my voice and demanded details. Sarah finally cracked under my intense questioning and told the truth: "I was tired of planning the wedding so John and I eloped on his birthday and ran off to Monterey for a one-day honeymoon." Once she had composed herself, Sarah added that she and her husband are both residents at Stanford Medical Center, she in plastic surgery and he in head and neck surgery. She explained that one day was all the free time their hectic work schedules would allow, but she plans a big wedding and proper honeymoon after her residency is over.
Kelly Freeman Wilson mailed some pictures and later told me she also eloped, in her words, "doing the whole Las Vegas thing" in 1986. Currently, Kelly is living in Pacific Palisades, Calif., with her husband, Charles, a newspaper publisher, and their 13-month daughter Amanda. Kelly is the self-proclaimed "volunteer of the century" and splits her time between the L.A. County Museum, the Junior League and the AfroAmerican Museum of California, to whose board she was appointed by the governor. She expects her second child in May.
Also at work producing the class of 2012 are Barbara (McElwaine) and Ed Gallian who, via a card, reported the birth of their first child, Conor Clark, on August 6. Barbara reports that their new addition already has his own set of Dartmouth sweats in preparation for the cold winters he is sure to face when he matriculates in 2008.
When it comes to reporting news to your secretary, special mention must go to John J. Trant '41 who wrote me that his daughter ™a Trant married Jordan Schlick (William and Mary 78) recently. I await Marsha's call with the details.
In closing, a final item of class business President Karen Francis has asked that anyone interested in serving on the class executive committee call her at 415/928- 0679. Although it is early October as I am writing these words, if my calculations are correct, you should be sipping eggnog, decking the halls, and dashing througn the snow as you read this column. With that in mind, here's wishing you and your families the best for a happy and healthy holiday season. '
