Only two more months until Reunion and a chance to return to beautiful Hanover at the most beautiful time of the year. John Gillespie, Pete Barker, and Dick Page report that plans are coming together, and they promise us the greatest 35th Reunion in College history. As of the last count, well over a hundred classmates have definitely committed to the reunion, better than 50 more have indicated that they will most likely be there. Based upon those early returns, close to 200 classmates should be returning for the great event. Don't miss the chance to be one of them. Make your plans now to be in Hanover, June 12-15.
Gerry Grady '53 sent a great picture of Mead Metcalf, Lonny Chaikin, and Gunther Perdue '49 taken at Mead's Crystal Palace in Aspen over the Christmas Holidays. Gerry reports that Lonny was visiting Aspen where Gunther Perdue was wowing them at the Crystal Place as a singing waiter on weekends. Mead just bought a retirement home in nearby Snowmass where he will continue to enjoy the acclaim that he has rightfully earned in the Aspen area.
The financial papers recently carried a statement by Ben Bowden—chairman of Bancßoston Financial Company and one of the more senior officers in the parent company, Bank of Boston—announcing the acquisition of the factoring portfolio of First Union Commercial Corp., a subsidiary of First Union National Bank of North Carolina. Ben, who has spent his entire business career with Bank of Boston, has been a leader in its factoring activity as well as in the areas of consumer banking as a former head of its Massachusetts bank, and as the individual in charge of its middle-market lending.
New England Business apparently has a great deal of admiration for Dartmouth '54s. After featuring George Graboys on the cover of its December issue as Business Person of the Year, it carried two articles in its January issue on two other '54s, ShellyWoolf and Tom Corcoran. Shelly was featured in an article, "NHD Hits the Nail on the Head," describing the growth of his company into the chain of 35 "great hardware stores." Shelly predicts a growth to 50 stores over the next five years and expects his company to be the king of "neighborhood hardware merchants." The same issue featured an article on our most visible skier,' Tom Corcoran, headlined "A Peak Performance 20 Years in the Making." The article describes Tom's effort to build Waterville Valley into the great ski center of the East. The article celebrated the completion of three major projects at Waterville, including a luxurious 139 unit lodge, Town Square, a retail and commercial center comprising more than 30 shops, offices, restaurants, apartments, and new state-ofthe-art slope equipment. Only Tom's tenaciousness could have accomplished what has been done at Waterville.
It looks like it's time to get your golf clubs and tennis rackets out and enjoy the spring weather and get into shape for the great 35th Reunion.
See you there.
