We came from the Pacific Northwest, from California and the Big Island of Hawaii, from Florida and from Maine. Four hundred of us, spouses and widows included, converged on the Hanover Plain for three days of fellowship, renewing old friendships, and just plain having a ball with the program that Dave Heald and his accomplished
It was all kicked off just before the big weekend by the arrival and thorough perusal of Alex Fanelli's super 50-year Book, continuous praises for which were accorded Alex throughout the weekend.
There seemed to be no dull moments, from early Friday registration through golf and tennis competitions on Friday morning, a Dartmouth history lecture Friday afternoon; the typically successful Heald clambake Friday evening; the Glee Club and Chambers Singers concert before a packed Spaulding Auditorium Friday night; a moving Memorial Service conducted by classmate Rev. RogerRobison Saturday morning; the Reunion class meeting (see below) and the class picture in front of Dartmouth Row; the Trustee luncheon at noon on Saturday, at which WarrenKreter presented College President James Freedman with the class's $832,000 gift, and classmate Dr. Stu Finch gave the 50-year Address; then the series of Mike deSherbinin-organized seminars Saturday afternoon that drew standing-room-only crowds; the class banquet Saturday night, featuring a class movie highlighting the years 1938—1942; on to late night dancing and reminiscing at the Class Tent headquarters; and finally, on Sunday, the impressive Commencement program on the lawn in front of Baker and the final Class function, a lovely luncheon in the Bema, to close things out.
At the class meeting the nominating committee, chaired by former Prexy Dick Rugen and including Sid Bull, Dick Burns, DaveSargent, and Charlie Weinberg, presented a slate of officers to lead the class until our 55th Reunion. John Corwith will get a full term as president and will be assisted by Vice-Presidents Tom Blankley and WarrenKreter, Secretary Alex Fanelli, Treasurer ArtHenderson, and Class Representative on the Alumni Council Jim Ingersoll. Subsequently, the officers named Dick Lippman to another term as newsletter editor and appointed BuzzCassidy as head agent.
It was a once-in-a-50-year-span celebration. Amen.
And to close out my tenure, here are a few final scraps: Bob Kirk stepped down in March as a Hanover selectman after six years of service, much of it as chairman (or, in essence, mayor of Hanover). And Leo Caproni was honored in April by the National Executive Service Corporation in recognition of his volunteer management consulting services.
