Welcome to the no-frills, generic news column. If this month's news were marketed in stores, it would be in a plain white box with black lettering. This month, I learned that Andy Dacy is working for Manufacturers Hanover Trust in New York in the Global Shipping Division. Whether they ship globes to elementary schools or ship items worldwide is anyone's guess; I'm betting on the latter, given Andy's English background.
Also heard that Scott Abernathy is involved in a Boston group called Bridge Over Troubled Water. Scott is the outreach coordinator for this non-profit social advocacy group.
Deb Hannay is closing in on the end of her first year at Princeton Theological Seminary. Deb's working on her master of divinity degree and writes, "I'm taking all the 'basics'— introductions to the Old and New Testaments, theology, church history, and even some biblical Hebrew." Deb also adds, "There aren't too many Dartmouth types in the area." Not surprising, I guess, given the spiritual chasm between Webster Avenue and a seminary.
Those of you who've seen the excellent motion picture "Rain Man" will be interested to know that Bridget McCaffrey is working at the New England Center for Autism in Southboro, Mass. "It's really hard work, but it's also very interesting," Bridget writes. "Some of the kids have to be watched every single minute or they would literally run out into traffic."
Someone who's not in traffic but who's moving forward with direction is Val Robins. Val writes, "I'm putting my B.A. in economics to the fullest use, working as a lab technician in my father's biomedical lab at the Boston V.A.. Hospital. I study cholesterol transport in rats that are fed a variety of fatty acids. Or something like that. And I'm going to U-Mass Med School next year." Congrats, Val.
Our classmate John Mackay had a solid year on the hardwood for the Big Green; Mackay led the team in steals .and shot a team-high 45 percent from three-point land. He roomed with John Sipple this past year; Mr. Sipple is student teaching at Hanover High and planning to stick around for rumor has it. As for Mr. Mackay, he 11 be back for another run at the Ivy League title next season.
The majority of the info in this column was fed to me by Jack Steinberg, our intrepid newsletter editor, who has left the Hartford Courant and taken a job with The York Times in their Washington bureau. Jack is a special assistant to columnist James Reston and he got his first byline with a story on taxes back in early March.
