I have been elected regional director of The Private Bank at BankBoston in Springfield, Mass. BankBoston is the name of the new organization formed as a result of the purchase of Bayßanks, Inc., by the Bank of Boston. Previously, I headed up the Springfield trust office for BayBank, N.A. I can report that I'm close to being able to drive the Mass. Turnpike in my sleep.
I had a note from Bart Palmer, who has accepted an endowed chair at Clemson University, where he is the new Calhoun Lemon Professor of Literature. Previously Bart spent 22 years teaching at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Bart is also executive director of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association. According to Bart, this entails driving down to Atlanta one day a week to run a busy office which publishes a quarterly journal and sponsors an annual convention featuring more than 500 academic presentations. He describes himself as working schizophrenically in two disconnected areas: American film history and fourteenth-century literature. His latest book is Hollywood's Dark Cinema: TheAmerica Film Noir. His medievalist persona has been laboring on a long (so far 12 years and five volumes) task editing and translating the poetry of Guillaume de Machaut. The latest volume, The Taking ofAlexandria, involved close and helpful collaboration from Charlie Wood of the history department at the College. Bart, Carla, and their two sons, Colin (15) and Camden (2), enjoy life in Clemson.
Leckie Rives, who at last report was "in the market," as the saying goes, has accepted a position as senior vice presidentfinance and administration for Vista Medical Distribution Corp., a new company based in Orange County, Calif. Although he still calls Charlotte, N.C., home, Leckie plans to relocate to the Irvine, Calif., area once daughter Lindsay graduates from high school in the spring. Vista was formed to acquire and consolidate a number of independent distributors of laboratory equipment and medical/surgical supplies. Leckie's responsibilities, include all financial functions plus legal, MIS, strategic planning, and mergers/acquisitions. He extends his thanks to all '68s who helped and encouraged him over the past 2 1/2 years.
Finally, a great big round of snaps for John Engelman, whose work made our 50th birthday celebration such a success! The consensus at the class meeting the following morning was that we should have a class dinner every year on the weekend of the first home game.
