In cleaning out my files, I ran across the letter from Giff Foley that I thought I had lost. He sent along a brochure from the Westin Kauai Hotel at Kauai Lagoons in Hawaii, whose manager is our own Jim Treadway. Jim's picture is featured twice in the brochure, once with newly-crowned Mrs. America, 1988. Jim is holding her rather closely which makes me believe that Mr. America was not around. From all indications, the hotel is one of the most spectacular ever built.

Dick Glovsky sent me a list of quickhitting items he received while doing an Alumni Fund telethon. Rick Wallick works at Wheaton College in an administrative financial position. Randy Wallick continues to work for Touche-Ross in New York. John Verb builds and owns several small shopping malls in New Jersey. Lee Seabury is an attorney in Springfield, Mass., specializing in real estate. Dan Papp is director of the School of Social Sciences at Georgia Tech. Doug Nichols is a demographer specializing in AIDS and spends one-third of the year in Africa.

John Kitzhaber, president of the Oregon Senate, is taking some heat for controversial medicaid legislation he authored. The bill, passed two years ago, distributes the limited medicaid funds in a way that will serve the most people. This has eliminated some medical services that the state formerly paid for and has enraged many. As often happens when someone makes the tough decisions, he has been attacked personally with critics calling him "Dr. Death." Hang tough, John.

John Talmadge has added addiction medicine to his psychiatry practice in College Station, Tex. Tex, himself, is a recovered addict/alcoholic having started on the addiction path in Vietnam. He wonders how many classmates had or have similar problems and whether in addition to tapped Kegs there were any AA meetings at our reunion. Tex also sends news of Chris Stillbach who lives on his boat, the Scarecrow, on the island of Mustique in the Grenadines. Last fail, Chris sat down at a bar and at the other end of the room were Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, and David Bowie. I don't suppose they wrote to their friends about seeing Chris.

John Spooner has moved into a new position as area vice president/general manager for one of the four regional operations of Frito-Lay Inc. John's headquarters will be in Piano, Tex. John was formerly area vice president for Pepsico, Inc. in Europe. Frito-Lay is a division of Pepsico.

At the Hartwell School in Lincoln, Mass., there is a new $87,000 playground named "Strat's Place" after Mike Stratton. The playground is a result of the efforts of hundreds of people who raised money, donated materials, and spent five 12-hour days building it. Mike's wife, Nancy, said, "He loved people working together. He would have loved the community spirit, the sense of accomplishment."

Homecoming weekend is October 13-14. Dartmouth Night is Friday and of course features the bonfire. The game is against Yale and we will have our usual pre-game get-together across from Topliff Hall. Look for the banner. Saturday night there will be a class dinner in room 107 at the Hanover Inn. I'll give you more details when I get them. All for now. Take care and write.
