Classmates, I have some sad news to report. Joel DeWeese was involved in a car accident in November. He suffered a broken neck with quadraplegia in addition to a broken leg. He has been hospitalized at St. Lukes Hospital in Fargo, N.D., and by now has been transferred to the Sister Kinney Hospital in Minneapolis. Joel has maintained good spirits throughout the ordeal and a note from any of his friends would certainly be appreciated. Joel is a doctor at the Bemidji Clinic in Bemidji, Minn.
David Shipler writes that wife Debby gave birth in August 1977 to son Michael, their third and last child. Their other children are Laura, five, and Jonathan, 12, who they adopted in Saigon three years ago. Dave is bureau chief for the New York Times in Moscow and says that Moscow "is not an easy place to cope with. If any '64s come by this way, please bring a head of lettuce - will pay anything (almost)!"
Steve Ward sends regards from Westmont, Quebec. Steve is lamenting the falling prices of real estate owned by non-French Canadians.
Mark Ogilvie has moved from Jamaica (where he was a shipping agent) to Toronto. His wife Lindsay is a nurse, and they have two children (a boy, two, and a girl, one). Mark is working in Toronto as a marine surveyor with Lloyds Agents.
Whit Foster has finally returned to the U.S. (New York City) after 11 of the last 13 years outside the country. Whit is working for the U.N. Development Programme as an area officer dealing with projects in Egypt, Syria, and the two Yemins. Whit is living at 20 Waterside Plaza, N.Y., N.Y., and hopes to hoist a few (or is it give a rouse?) with '64s in the area.
I have to quote Pete "Chubby" Leutweiler's letter: "We are now back in the states enjoying Pittsburgh suburbia [he's with Gulf Oil]. ... Frequently our people run into Brad Evans, so Morgan Stanley must have something good. Bob Freeman and I have been in touch, primarily because of our surprise [to me, too] acquisition of Kewanee [?]. In my job, I don't do much traveling, which pleases Marlene. Believe it or not, I am now a den leader in cub scouts." Is a den leader the same as a den mother? I always knew Chubby was a mother.
Class news from Gerard O'Brien: "It is raining in France." He didn't tell me whether he was all wet or not. Tom Carrol writes that "Nancy and I just had our first child - Lauren Elizabeth (August 11, 1977). Spending a lot of time in Hanover area, again building condominiums in Norwich, Vt. I still get a good feeling every time I pull into Hanover." (That's because you get rid of that bad feeling of driving through West Lebanon).
Steve Bachman reports the following: "I changed jobs this past February - am now controller and treasurer of Cummins Wagner Co., primarily a sales organization representing mechanical equipment manufacturers. This company does not have the 'politics' of my previous employer. I am once again sailing a Lightning (as I did while at Dartmouth). Wife Carol is busy with bluebirds, campfire girls, roller skating, piano, etc. I'm still playing hockey [after three kids, he's got nothing to lose]."
George Gardella is married, with three children: Carolyn, nine, Mathew, eight, and Diane, five. He is vice president in the trust and investment division of Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. of New York. He sails, plays tennis, and occasionally runs a marathon.
That's it for this month. Again, classmates, a note to Joel DeWeese would be thoughtful.
