According to Henry Ward Beecher in 1870, "October is nature's funeral month. Nature glories in death more than in life. The month of departure is more beautiful than the month of coming-October more than May. Every green thing loves to die in bright colors." His is an ambiguous sentiment, to be sure, but we agree to this extent: if we "green things" have a choice, we'll go out blazing!
The great success of the August 3-5 minireunion in Williamstown will have positive effects for summers to come. The combining of Williams and Dartmouth 195 Is could not have been more congenial nor better planned and received: everyone said we should do it every year. Each contingent comprised more than 20 at our joint functions of Saturday cocktail hour at the home of Jim Conway, Williams '51, and dinner at The Orchards, where group singing of our college songs and trading of memories of athletic competitions ended the evening. Those who raised their voices for "Dear Old Dartmouth" were Hank and Shirley Sanders, Stu and Joan Johnson, Russ Dilks, Chet and Pat Cotter, Nancy Bridge, Jack and Carole Giegerich, Bob and Kathy Hustek, Nase and Martha Hurowitz, Joe and Marty Caldwell, Dave Batchelder and Schatzi, Bob and Shirley Langworthy, Aaron Rausen, and your correspondent. In addition, Cindy Wallace (Jack's sister) accompanied Nancy (Batch's sister); and Fred Hampson joined me. Besides all the conviviality, we enjoyed breakfast by a babbling brook, museum-going and antiquing, and an entire weekend of perfect northern Berkshire weather. Our classmates Batch, Jack, and Nase deserve our praise: thanks, guys, for a great time!
While the latest mid-summer mini was outstanding, nothing short of our full-scale reunions can top those fall Dartmouth Night gatherings each year when our class amasses up to 100 (count 'em!) of us. Perhaps it's the crisp October air, perhaps it's the Martins' hospitality, perhaps it's the rally bonfire, perhaps it's the Choukas "chowda," perhaps it's the football game, perhaps it's the Halls' great food, perhaps it's just being back on campus whatever it is, the fall mini is a weekend that more and more of us are finding time to enjoy. And this year, Dartmouth is going to beat Yale on Saturday, October 13 mark my words (or if I'm wrong, forget them!).
Jack and Eloise Burnett, we hear, have returned to Hacienda Heights, Calif., from the Dominican Republic, where Jack served as a volunteer with the International Executive Service Corps, a non-profit organization devoted to providing managerial and technical assistance to businesses in developing countries. Earlier, Jack had retired from the packaging industry and was recruited by IESC to help a printing company in Santo Domingo to improve its labelprinting operation.
And finally: I need your help. How about dropping me a note to tell us all what is keeping you so busy? Thanks!
Take care, be good to yourselves, and keep in touch.
