There is a well-used loophole in my contract with Hanover which allows that when the 15th of the month falls on a weekend I have until fax-time on Monday to send in my notes. So here I sit on Sunday, September 16, wishing I were still as diligent and prepared as I was in my early days as class secretary.

This month's guest correspondent is Paul Ulbrich, writing from Honolulu:

"Greetings from Paradise! I have little to add to last year's comments. Another paper is to be published in the next Straub Foundation Proceedings and should be in most medical libraries. Called 'The Professional Values of Medicine in the Information Age,' it was presented at a physicians' conference last October. It's actually been described as entertaining reading.

Classmates probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that the first '73 to graduate (in April '72) was also the youngest (19), likely earned the least (usually hovering near the poverty line, and, not coincidentally, a bachelor), and is probably among the first to announce his retirement from the rat race. My last offer was a research fellowship from the Columbia University Medical School, an honor, especially since it was intended for med students only. It paid $8 per hour. Instead I bought a ticket to Honolulu, where I'm working as a temp often for $lO an hour. I sleep in Waikiki with a clear conscience.

Retirement can be fairly boring. You can splash around in the surf for only so long, so I'm reviving a dormant career as a musician... Your kids might point me out to you on MTV some day!"

In addition to the news, Paul wrote to ask that I forward a note "a little sixties nostalgia between two 'scratch a yuppie, find a hippie' types" to Paul Ungar, whose letter in the Summer column he "thoroughly enjoyed... It's fun to step on stage, say our peace, and to step off again, a little unburdened."

In that vein, I have a few challenges with respect to who will next take center stage. For quite some time, I have been sitting on scanty promotion releases from the College clipping service regarding Daniel L. Clark (senior vice president, marketing, research and development, and planning, Nabisco), Greg Maybury (director, computing and information technology, Hope College in Michigan), and Norbert White (manager, Colorado Small Business Unit, AT&T). I wish I had something a little more personal to fill in around the edges. Unfortunately, as often happens with moves like these, I can't track down current addresses and/or phone numbers. Maybe one or all of you could take the time to drop us a note about life after Dartmouth and its most recent challenges?

Pittsfield.

Well, other responsiblities beckon. George just gave Karen and Nick chocolate bars for lunch.
