With a long break between columns I thought I would be overwhelmed with news from all of you. Not so, and John McClintock notes a similar lack in his latest newsletter, but we will carry on.
From the College comes news that last fall Albert Martin was elected general chairman of the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl and elected to the game's board of governors. The event takes place at Memorial Field in Flanover every summer. Al's still over in Plymouth, Vt.
I received a great picture and note from Fred Garfield. The picture was taken last November at a mini-reunion of '46ers at DickFitzgerald's condo on Marco Island, Fla. Besides Fred and Dick, the others in the picture were Father Jon O'Brien, JohnGreisberger, and Steve Ehrlich. Thanks much, Fred.
Tom Adams, head of our Alumni Fund drive, is out of the blocks early. He set a goal of $165,000. Off the great effort of last year we should be able to do this. Tom did a great job (with your help), and I can assure he'll do another one in 1993. You'll be hearing more on this. I know you can hardly wait.
The last time out I told you about the V-12 reunion. Reg Pierce tells me that the response is far greater than expected. The following have signed up for the V-12 Glee Club: Tom Charles, tenor; Hal Plotnick, baritone; Welles Fendrich, tenor; Paul Barnes, bass; and Leo Warring, bass. Malcolm Johnson wants to perform on sax and flute with the Green Collegians Band. Peter Fuller and BillBeckwith want to do some boxing! That's right, I said boxing. And Welles Fendrich says he's going to sing and dance on top of a piano. Now that's more like it. I wasn't in V-12, so I don't know what went on there. I would have thought you'd opt for calisthenics and close- order drill.
Reg reported 11 inches of snow in Hanover back in January, the first decent snow in four years. I thought about that snow and how in our first year we didn't see the ground from November until April 1. My gosh, 50 years ago! And yet some things are so clear. The Great Train Crush at White River Junction, as we fled out of the North for the mid-semester break in December 1942. And daily— or nightly—parties as one and then another '46er left for the military. Enough nostalgia. Keep in touch.
