We had a nice visit with (Jane and Bill Pellington, who came by during their autumn golf safari on Cape Coa. Bill has made a good recovery from the surgery which prevented their attendance at our 50th. They are enjoying their new home in Kansas, where they are not far from their daughter's family.
One of the rewards for sending birthday greetings to our classmates is that some interesting responses often return. Steve Valensi, wno was with us for only one year in Hitchcock Hall before family circumstances required his transfer to UCLA, writes that his one year in Hanover is more deeply engraved in his psyche than any other single year outside of the war years. He sap that he can see it, smell it, and recall it with great intensity. Cliff Holmes makes the observation that he looks forward to the minireunions because they provide an intimacy which is lacking in the big June reunions. Bud Hewitt writes that he continues his practice of sending memorial gifts in the name of classmates whose deaths come to his attention.
We recently attended the Cape Cod Cornellians' annual dinner. The guest speaker was a dean who described many of the changes at Cornell during his tenure: new courses offered, buildings built, changing student demographics, etc. His diesis was that a college cannot be frozen in time but must respond to the changes in society. It is difficult for many alumni to accept the changes because their own college experiences seemed so nostalgically perfect. Are Dartmouth alumni any different?
On September 21 Dan Rectanus succumbed to a lengthy battle with viral encephalitis. Our sympathies to his family.
