For years, the beautiful brochures have slipped through my fingers but I have yet to board a single vessel. Alumni College Abroad in 1990 will offer trips to Antarctica, the Leeward Islands, China, Egypt, Istanbul (Danube), the Dutch Waterways, Alaska, and Russia. Call 603/646-2454. These of ferings give new meaning to the term going away to college.
If you think getting news from this class is easy, consider these stories. At the last class executive meeting I passed out an information request to approximately 35 '58s. Of course, looking around, all were the strong, silent type so I could only laugh when just one came back. Desperate, I made calls nationwide to seek some news. Here were the results.
Dan O'Hara of Lyme, N.H., had recorded a message with a lovely musical background but wasn't in. Dave Reed of Eton, Pa., was not at the number given. Larry Schwartz, formerly in development, is now in the corporate office of L'Oreal but was out of town. Dick Shanaman, former vice chairman and treasurer of American Stores in Salt Lake City, is no longer there. Larry Shaw, Belvidere, Wash., attorney, was out to lunch. Wally Smith of Boise Cascade in Boise, Idaho, also had a recorded message but wasn't in. Walter Stackler, real estate developer in Cold Harbor Springs, N.Y., took my call but was already on another long distance call. Well, at least we know all of these people are still alive and kicking. Unfortunately my time for investigative reporting ran out at this point.
In the last column, we discussed developments at the College. Since we all lose track a bit, it is worth noting what is going on. In the class of 1993 there were 1,045 students from 49 states, Puerto Rico, and 29 foreign countries. This class was 43 percent female and 57 percent male. Minorities comprised 19 percent of the total, and 90 percent of the class hiked off on one of the freshman trips. Entering enrollment at Tuck School was 162, Thayer 50, and 89 enrolled at the Medical School. Finally, 60 new graduate students enrolled in Arts and Sciences and three in music. This appears to be a total first-year enrollment of graduates and undergraduates of 1,409 on the Hanover Plain.
