When I took the role of class co-secretary, I (Bill Levin) nervously accepted, anticipating the unfortunate day when I would need to communicate distressing news to the class. Although I hoped this day would never come, I regret to inform you of the passing of our dear classmate Becky Barendick on August 18. As Holly Allen Ziegler wrote in the obituary section, "Becky was a funny, smart and creative person who was loved and cherished by her family and friends." The class of 1990 has set up a fund in Beckys memory that will be directed toward the construction and purchase of the home team bench at Dartmouth's new soccer stadium. Donations maybe sent to Cornelia Purcell, HB 6066, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755. Please make checks out to Dartmouth College, with the note that this is for the Rebecca Barendrick Memorial Fund. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Beckys family and friends during this time of great loss.
In early September Hurricane Katrina forcibly drove Henry O'Connor and his family out of his native New Orleans. He reflects: "Everyday things get better, as we try to adjust to our new surroundings of Mobile, Alabama. My wife, Ashley, and I have three children, Eugenie (5), Clarke (3) and John (5 months). They have been incredibly resilient during this ordeal, and Eugenie and Clarke are happy in their new school. The toughest part to swallow is the sudden dispersion of our entire community. We hope we will be back in New Orleans next year." Henry and Ashley returned for a recent visit to New Orleans and gratefully found their house still standing, with only wind damage, amidst much destruction and water damage in their beloved city. We rejoice in the safety and strength of the O'Connor family and their home.
Tim McAdam hosted a great Dartmouth 1990 mini-reunion BBQ in mid-October for all the 1990s in the San Francisco area. Joining Tim and his family were the families and spouses of Jake Reynolds, Lauren Greenberg, Lisa Anderson Hill, Bill Gaylord, Bill Fearon, Shailan Shah and Dana Weintraub. Other attendees included Steve Linde, Richard Hardegree and Brian Thorn.
We now have several short news flashes from across the country. Our valiant newsletter editor Jeanhee Kim and her husband, Luke Melia, welcomed their daughter Chiara Ahnhee Kimelia into this world on September 3. John Aguilar is a reporter at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado, and writes periodically for the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Sailing along, John Ryan was elected to a three-year term on the national board of directors for the Maritime Law Association of the United States. John works as an attorney in Norfolk, Virginia. Hanging in N.Y.C., Wes Wang has recently started a new firm, Phoenix Partners Group, an interdealer broker of credit derivatives. Wes had an eventful summer of travel to Dubai, Fujairah, Sundance, Cozumel and Jackson Hole, where he got his hang gliding license and bought a glider. It is so very tough "being" Wes Wang.
Finally, Jessica Silver, her husband Ed Eaton and their children Raina (8) and Riley (2) "just escaped the D.C. beltway madness and moved to Hawaii. We are living on the island of Kauai, and our house is high on a hill overlooking the ocean, where we can see the sunrise each morning. Anyone vacationing on this beautiful island should look us up." I might now be more envious of Jessica than Wes!
As I write, the trees are almost bare and the hills look ready for their winter rest. If you get to Boston, let me know; the drinks will be on me.
